I'm getting very irritated @ having 2 remove my AFX/UDP everytime I try & do something... the threads in my crank R not nearly as strong as they R supposed 2 B now Bcause of it . R there any reasons Y I can't/shouldn't just leave the timing belt cover off permanently?

Also, if some1 has some ideas on how 2 remove the UDP w/out putting pressure on the threads or what the dampers our manual says 2 use R, I'd really like 2 know .

I havent had the timing belt cover on for about 2 years... there is a lot of shit on our engines and all engines that is pure wastefullness and deadweight to boot.

There is a possibility of catching debris in the belt and skipping a tooth or so in timing.

Like Mike said, there is a possibility; however, I've had mine off for about a year now and haven't had any problems.

It has happened before, somebody I met once with a 2.5L Chrysler had it happen. It is rare, but possible.

2 years without one and I don't think anything ever fell in there. You have to very careful when working with wrenches etc not to drop it in there. Some people make a removeable cover out of plexiglass.

Making an easy, removable cover out of plexiglass sounds like a really good idea. How much damage did that 2.5L Chrysler take on?

I would'nt do it. My bro bent two valve on its Gvr4 when one bolt came loose and fell inside the timing belt area and skip a tooth. Needed a new engine afterwards.

I think what I'd like 2 do then is buy an Xtra set of the timing belt cover from a junk yard & cut them up so they don't go around the crank until I'm able 2 set aside enough time 2 make a custom 1 out of plexiglass.

Like everyone has mentioned, by removing the timing belt covers, there's a possibility of getting debris, such as little pebbles and wires, in there that could cut or jam up the timing belt. If it snaps, there's a possibility that you could have bent valves or something. Depending on where you live, and how often you drive your car, the exposure factor will increase or decrease that risk.
