Well tonight I am simply driving home from my girlfriend's house, not driving the car hard at all or anything and I take a left turn at a stoplight out of her neighborhood and shift into 2nd at about 2500 rpm and wuuunngg... So I take the shifter out (thought it might have been my fault and missed the gear) and shove it back in and continue home. In 5th, I go to speed up since the speed limit just changed from 45 to 55 and it won't do anything. I try to downshift to 3rd (testing my theory about the clutch) and the car revs way up and won't do anything. I cautiously finish the way home and park when I start to notice the noxious fumes coming from the direction of my feet.

So, unless I know nothing, I think the damn car's clutch is burnt out. After ONLY 72,000 friggin miles. Now I don't know what Satan's policy on drivetrain coverage is (for a 98) but I'm pretty sure a clutch will last longer than 72K miles. So, does anyone know our warranty.

Second, if I'm truly screwed, what clutch does everyone recommend? I've heard Super20G badmouthing centerforce so I think that would be bad, I've been told an ACT 2100 or 2600 is the way to go. I don't currently have the funds to go turbo but I plan on it within a couple years (poor college kid), so I might as well get the clutch thing done now. How involved is replacing the clutch in a 2GNT? Would it be worth it to get an Unorthodox or RRE flywheel? unfourtunately...a clutch is a weariable part, like brakes or tires...so the warranty isnt as good as you think for a clutch. I myself am nearing the day for a clutch replacement, as my throw out bearing is grinding too rite now. 70k on a clutch is possible, just sounds like there was a lot of hard driving on that car. I would check out one of those clutches at summitracing.com

the same exact thing happened to me. i was certain that my clutch was gone so i went and bought a new one and took it to the garage to have it installed...turns out it was the clutch master cylinder and was much cheaper to fix...i got it done for around $200 for parts and labor i think it was, which was cheaper than just the clutch i had bought. so i would get that checked out first.
