Ok, i have a 95 GS. My problem is that in the mornings my car will hesistate, and ive read on here that this problem is normal. I only have an intake and exhaust. Now what my problem is: When driving the car home after work, ie 3 oclock in the afternoon, at WOT the car will still hesitate. I will also start to smell a like gas scent. I have changed plugs, wires, fuel pump, filter, and valve cover gasket. I have no clue as to why the car does this, but i want it fixed because i would love to go to the track just to get some slips and practice, but with the car hesitating, i dont want to risk anything. Need more information. When you checked you plugs, were they fouled? Too much fuel? How long ago did you add the intake and exhaust? If it was recently (within the last week) then the ECU is still trying to determine good fuel trims for your car.

Do you always buy fuel from the same place? Did you change octane?

Hesitation could also be coming from bad plug wires. How old are they? Are they the stock wires?

Time of day normally will not effect how a car drives unless you have temperature variations of more than 40 degrees from morning cool to afternoon heat.

i've also that every morning when i back my car out of the driveway i smell gas...i guess coming from the exhaust. any ideas what it could be...is it normal? BTW, my exhaust is stock.

That's just high idle rich mixture. Every car does that. Especially since most car's with aftermarket intakes will have a little water condensation in the intake pipe. That just makes the smell worse, but there are no ill side effects from it.

You should smell what the idle is like when you have 102 octane unleaded in the morning. It's about enough to give you a headache.

I've never heard that before 'every car smells like gas in the morning (IE: warmming up)' I've never had a vehicle that smelt like gas while warming up.. Hell I drove a 73' Ford with a 390ci carburated.. it didn't smell like gas once it was running (it did while i was stomping on the peddle trying to get it started.. haha)

Modern cars are programmed to run rich while cold to enhance idle/drivability. Once up to temp it subsides. If your ar is hesitating and you've changed wires check to see if your EGR valve is sticking. If will cause the car to run rich and stumble. Check the PVC for sticking also.

When i checked the plugs, they werent fouled. I just bought ngk wires along with the plugs. I just replaced the pcv valve, and where is my egr valve and what could be wrong with it?

How many miles on your car? No one has mentioned the posibility of a bad cat yet, a clogged cat could cause hesitation and a bad smell to the gas, and a hesitation until air flow is increased to overcome the restriction. But yes the car will run rich during warm up. If this never goes away there is also the posibility that it is the coolant temp sensor, what does yuor temp gauge read? Does it get to normal operating temp? Other posibilities may be a bad O2 sensor, etc. Does your car have a check engine light? If so what codes?

well my car kinda smells like gas when I start it up think of it makes sense right the engine is cold so the combustion won't be that complete so not all the fuel gets burned. When the engine is good and hot the fuel burns better and the cat is like super hot so it'll burn up the fuel smell and crap there also. Hehe aside from gas it smells like carbon monoxide not good stuff O_o.

Why is your post directed towards 420A Gurus? I would guess anybody who has a 420A regardless how much they know could help you out. Just say my car smells like gas when I start it up whats up with that?

My question was directed at anyone who knows anything about the 420a. Thanks for all the responses by the way. Im getting ready to go to the beach so i have to make this fast. I have a 95 with 117000 miles. I've never thought about the cat being clogged, is there any way to check that? I have replaced the coolant temp sensor not too long ago. My car was running a little hotter than normal the other day and i have no clue why. Im running the 5es plugs by ngk, could this be the source? For the check engine light, i dont think mine works. Ive never seen it come on, even when it cut out on my going down the interstate. How do i check the codes on my car, i know there is a trick with turning the key, but i dont know how to exactly do it. Thanks for any more help.

A clogged cat will raise the engine temperature, for seemingly no reason. If it gets too clogged the cat will catch fire. My uncle's Couger went up in flames because of a clogged cat.

The hesitation at WOT may indicate a clogged cat as well. Generally speaking anything blocking the exhaust will make it hesitate like that.

So, if there isn't a bannana in the tailpipe, the cat may be clogged. A cheap way to find out would be to throw a test pipe on - they are $40 from testpipe.com. If the car runs better, replace the cat...or just keep the test pipe on.

If the cat is really bad, it will actually glow red when heated up. At night very visable. A smell of gas and/or rotten eggs smell(sulfer) would indicate a clogged cat. With that many miles a clogged cat would not surprise me at all.

I'd lean more towards an o2 issue. The MIL (check engine light) light (along with every other cluster warning light) should come on when you first turn the key into the on position. If there's no check engine light to come on... it's either been taken out or disabled. You may find that there's multiple problems if the MIL light doesn't work. You should never be able to smell RAW gas. If you do, you've got a leak somewhere. But a rich mixture is different. I'd look into the MIL light first before throwing any parts or labor at it.

i used to always have that raw fuel smell. found out that my roll over valve on top of the gas tank was bad. it costs about forty bucks from satan and is a pain in the ass to install with out a lift.

well, i think my cat is the problem with the car. Today when i started the car, i put it in reverse and while i was backing out of the driveway, it smelled like someone did one of those wet farts that stinks sooo bad. Im going to pull my cat off tomorrow and check it out. I was thinking about just clearing it out anyway. I'll let you all know what happens
