Okay I know the auto is a little slower than the 5 spd 2gnt, but I was wondering who has the faster "all motor" auto on here. The 5 spd boys are always telling us to do a tranny swap, but is the auto tranny really that bad? Isn't the auto only under a sec slower than the 5 spd? Let me know what y'all think!

the auto tranny isn't that bad really, get a level ten pts kit to even things out....and then turbo it so you don't loose boost during shifts

The automatic is a full second slower than the 5-speed. 1 second seems like only a little, but it is a LOT.

It costs a lot...and could be better spent moving up another stage as far as turbo goes, or swapping to a manual.

That's true, with automatic, between shifts you can hold boost, and can also build boost at the line. But it isn't equivelant of boosting a 5-speed.

5-speed is the way to go, and keep in mind this is coming from the owner of an automatic, even though 5-speed owners will give the same advice as me.

Alright, I conisder myself an expert on this subject. I was an automatic. That transmission blew up. I swapped the 5 speed in, and after 1 day, it would pop out of 3rd and 5th, and just wouldn't go into 4th. Turns out there was a hole in it, so I swapped in another 5 speed. Anyways, back to the topic at hand...
Results? A huuuuuuuuuuuuuge diffence. My car is actually quick now. I knew that there would be a difference, but I didn't expect that much of a difference. The automatic always felt like it was lazy, and I don't know why. I guess that part could be fixed with a shift kit, but there is such a huge difference now that it is a 5 speed. I have a permenant shit-eatin' grin whenever I drive now.

well, i really love driving a 5 speed, this car was my wifes but she wanted a civic so i decided to take it for my own. the only thing i didn't like about it was that it was an auto, but a 5 speed is fun to drive and a 1 sec difference is always nice . so with that in mind, would only a 5 speed 2gnt tranny work or are there other cars we can use the tranny from? I know there are other 420a cars out there but isn't there engine setup different as far as the way they sit, meaning there trannys wouldn't be position right for our cars or am i totally wrong?

The 1995-1999 4 cylinder Sebrings and Avengers also shared the transmission. You can use the internals from a Neon if you are willing to either weld the mounts on or swap cases with an Avenger, Sebring, or 2GNT. I would probably find a tranny from the A/S/2GNT, though.

I've driven a nearly stock auto it's not so bad. Just you can't do as many tricks with it like downshiftng (yeah you could do it in an auto but it's not as effective), double clutching (no clutch), heel and toe, engine braking, and just plain fun. Autos have a lag in shifts though, if you look at any auto car it'll shift and it'll slip the torque converter for a bit and accelerate. So you could drop out of the power band or something. With a stick you can instanteniously engage and disengage the engine so there is hardly and lag.
