make sure your firmly depressing the break pedal until u hear a 'click'. put in park, step down on brake and it locks in place and u can turn your key out.

There is a cable operated lock that keeps you from moving it out of park unless your foot is on the brake. I believe there is something similar for pulling the key out. I believe you can get at it if you remove the center console (houses shifter, cup holder, storage bin). You may also have to remove the shift handle and the thing with 1-2-D-R-P on it. Then you should be able to access the shifting/locking mechanisms. I pulled all of this apart a year ago to paint things and fix the ratcheting function. A bushing had worn out and it wasn't selecting the gears reliably (if you put it in D, it might stay in 2nd gear). It will take time to take it all apart, but no major tools are required.
