What kind of gains could someone expect for porting/milling the head, and for how much?

Also, for milling the head, how much would you really "shave" it?

Sorry if these are stupid questions, I'm trying to learn all of this as I go.

There's some info if you search the boards. I think we put some of it in the Seen before forum...

I will say that this should not be your first mod. If you go and port yoru head with no other mods done. You will loose power. You need to keep air moving fast, with ports too big you can't do this. But if you have a good set of cams, a good exhaust, good intake. ported polished, port matched intake then you will be at the point where this can help you. We have a pretty good design to our head, so it's not like an old Chevy V-8 where by bolting on a set of heads, with no other mods, will give you 40hp at the wheels. Head work is not cheap either, a minimun of probably $500 to get porting and polishing.

You can mill your head for raised compression, for every point in compression you see about a 3-4% increase in power. So again this is a mod that will take advantage of everything else you have bolted on. The num,bers for what need to be shaved to get what compression numbers are floatign around the board, check the seen before and do some searching, I don't remember off the top of my head.If you start to go over 11.5:1 compression I would seriously concider a good ignition with retard capability. To be safe so you can retard timing to prevent detonation.

Basically start with the bolt ons, get the intake and exhaust flowing well enough to warrant the head work. Otherwise you won't be happy with the money you've spent.
