If you want to wuiet the exhaust down, try an actual muffler not a resonator. A lot of companies make muffler that are only 3 to 4 inches around and you can weld it inline with the pipe elimintaing the stock resonator. I think this would help.
A cherryy bomb is only $15 and should be a good replacement for the stock resonator is you want a better tone. quiets down at idle but gets louder (from the exhausts I;'ve heard with one on). Or you could try a dedicated resonator, from a company like Dynomax. (probably what I'll try on my Neon, it's too loud in the highway range too)
