#2058, "Help! My new Belts are squealing really loud!"

Hey everybody, it's been a week since I got my timing,A/C,alternator belts changed. It was running quiet for a week and until today. When I start her up, she squeals for a minute and sometimes when I mash the throttle, it starts squealing again. Mike95RS said in a previous post that new belts need to settle, so is that the case or do they need tightening? Is it ruining the engine if I keep driving it?

If it's the AC/Powersteering belt, then don't worry about it. It is known to squeal. SHould the belt come off, at worst you will lose power steering. No damage to car parts here.

If the timing belt is making noise, then start worrying! Go back to the dude who installed itimmediately!

The alternator belt, should that come off, usually means that you will drain you battery within a few minutes, also no real "mechanical" damage, except that you may need a new battery after that, 'coz the old one would be dead (not cool!)

There are (as far as I know) no real solutions to getting rid of the squealing, but DO go back to the person who installed them and see what they say about the noise. The tensioner(s) might need tightening a little.

How to test which belt is squealing.... Spray the AC/PS belt with some Carb cleaner and if the squealing stops, then that is the culprit! Remember though, that Carb-cleaner is a TEMPORARY solution, and also don't mention this to your dealer, as they will blame that for the squealing....

Good Luck
