#20237, "Spark Plug torquing"

Umm ok I did another compression test yesterday and when i was torquing the #2 sparkplug the damn thread on the spark plug broke off in the thread. I'm like WTF?! Exactly how much do you guys torque you spark plugs. I rather torque them than just snug em, hehe I like to be precise. I was usins a big A$$ torque wrench to torque it though so that might have been why it broke. What do you guys normally torque it to or do to tighten it just wondering and what's the spec? I try to torque it at 18 lbs maybe that's too much...

Damn there goes some 7Es down the drain I had to bust out the ol 6Es emoji

heh incase your wonder how I got it out. I was foragging around the garage trying to figure out how I could get it out and I tried sticking screw drivers and files down there trying to rotate it by the electrode, no dice. Then my dad tells me to use a bolt extractor so were macguvyer rig this bolt extractor bit to grab onto the borken piece and whatta ya know I got it. Stuck a small hose in there and hooked it up to a vacuum to make sure if any pieces broke off into the combustion chamber and popped in my ol 6es and it was ready to roll.

I'm not sure if there's a torque spec. but I seat the plugs and tighten 1/4 turn.

I believe it's 11 ft/lbs of torque, or almost a 1/4 turn after it begins to feel tight. Any more than that and you could strip the threads in the aluminum head.

holy shit guys, if you over tighten them then you will strip the threads out of your head and the only way to fix that is to replace the head. every thing i have seen says 19-21 ft/lbs. i do mine at 21 just to be sure, but you dont want to over do it or it can be very costly.

The manual specs it at something real small. I was thinking 8lbs off the top of my head, but looking at the answers above, I would tend to think fly1 was correct at 11lbs. Be careful not to tighten too much!

I just do the quarter turn method. The 420A rebuild manual says 20 ft lbs.

I put never-seize on the threads and torque to 18-20 ft-lbs (like the book says). Never any problems.

I don't even torque them. I turn them by hand, then do maybe a 1/4 turn, sometimes less.

I'd rather have then not quite tight enough rather than strip the head.. screw that emoji
