#19588, "Eclipse & Avenger Main Bearings?? Crank Gear Problem~~!!!"
I just bought a set of Main Bearings for my Car .. Federal Mogul The Bottom part fits in fine with the oil port.. but the top ones.. have the little notch on the Wrong Side.> Are the Avenger and Eclipse the Same???
Also i am puttin my Crank Gear back on (the one the TIMING belt goes on) and i'm haveing a hard enough time as it is, gettin the damn thing on, but i wanna know if it should go the entire way back against the oil pump... I know there was a little play in it when i took it off, but not much,... I know i don't want it UP against the Oil Pump.. Does it Cover the Entire little key? When almost the entire way back it looks like the TIMING belt will just Miss the Round part of the oil pump.. like it "could" scrape against it and wear it down, unless there is the right tension on it... Does anyone have pics of what it should look like? thanx Ray

what do you mean a second set?? I have part numbers from NAPA, Federal Mogul, Clevite, Sealed Power.. There is no difference from the Avenger to Eclipse ...except Carparts.com has a Clevite listing.. Part # MS-1559P that is NOT under the Avenger ... for 95
But i just went to NAPA under Mitsu, and it just has stuff for TURBO (4G63) BUT if you goto Avenger it has part #'s and then If you goto Eagle Talon (Chysler ENgine) Option.. it has a part # for Clevite Different than the part number from Carparts.. MS2028P.....i'm wondering if thats the difference

The blocks were different in 1995 than the blocks from 1996-1999. In order to use aftermarket bearings you have to buy 2 sets of bearings and use the side that fits and not use the side that doesn't fit. You'll end up with a full sets worth of bearings that you won't use since they won't fit. The only other option is to use the stock bearings from the dealer.

Exactly. The first run of the 420A block had the anti-spin notches cut in a way that made the top and bottom halves interchangable. They ran into problems with the assembly. however, int hat sometimes the bearings would get switched, which would block the oil port and cause the journal to burn up in short order.
What you need to do is buy another set of mains and use two top halves for the main bearings. The main benefit of this is a full 360* oil groove for your mains, which means they get more oil, and in turn so does the rest of the rotating assembly. The only drawback i can think of to this setup would be a slight loss of load bearing surface, which may not be an issue at all as the clevite/federal mogul mains are slightly wider than stock, as well as the fact the increased lubrication will likly offset any additional wear that could occur.
Don't sweat it, i had to do that same thing, and i found out the same way you did.

JUST got off the phone, 3 hours later and talking with Clevite Engineers - Tech help.. Fed Mogul and Top line.. Top Line WINS!!! they make both the early and late bearings for the 420A block.. so YES !! there is an aftermarket bearing manuf. that you ONLY need to buy one set.. Top Line has two part #'s for the 1995 Mitsu 420A...
If you stack all the bearings on top of each other FACING You and all the tabs are on the same side (LEFT) then you need TOP LINE PART #
MB C26E
If you need the bearings to Alternate sides Left - Right for the bearings when in a complete circle on the same side.. you need part #
MB C26
There you go this should help ALOT of people Out Ray

Glad somebody actually did some research on the situation.
I'm one of those people who is just too lazy. Rather than actually care, i just found the easiest, quickest, i need my motor back together solution and bought another set of bearings.
Good job!
