#18387, "alternator belt install"

my alternator belt shredded today and I will have to install this myself. I have some degree of skill at stuff like this but I thought I better consult you guys first. I have the belt, and it appears I have to take off the power steering belt first. I think I can get the belt on, but I don't know what the tension should be on both belts. My chiltons guide said 22 lbs. I have no way of measuring this. Is there any way I can measure this without a belt tension tool? My Dad said that he used to tell on V belts by trying to twist the belt a certain way. Anyways, any help appreciated.
