#1773, "Cam gears - cover?"

Just wondering what those of you with cam gears did with the outer cover.

I guess you can either not reinstall the outer cover, or cut access holes in it. Any preferences either way? I'd prefer to keep the cover, but you need access to the gear adjustment somehow. The part is almost $40 from the local Chrysler shop (a bit more than I was hoping for), so I'm not sure I want to buy another to cut up.

Also, how hard is it to remove/install the outer cover? I haven't tried this yet, and was thinking that if its pretty simple I'd just have them put the stock one back on and deal with the issue later.

Just so you know, I got a set of AEM cam gears. Having them installed tomorrow along with a water pump and timing belt swap.

The cover it self is just a few bolt, but to take it off you need to pull the Crank shaft pulley off which means the timing belt. emoji
That is why I chose to leave the top half off the front cover. I didnt cut it I just kinda broke it in half during one of my fits of rage when I cut my self on it. emoji
I would suggest you at leat leave the bottom half as it keeps stuff out of the crank shaft bearing, but the top half I would keep it off.

did you cut the top part of the cover off completely, or just along the horizontal face?

I think I'll bring my dremel with me while I'm at the dealer and cut the stock one. I'm sure there's a way to make it re-attachable and still look semi-original so you could have it there for smog.

Just wish I had more time to figure out the ideal solution...

Hey Juan, that cover is really flimsy. So mine just kinda broke in half, so I still have the bottom half, covering the bearings and other stuff down there, but the top half is completely exposed. I think you can try to cut horizontally so that you can try to reattach the top part later if you need to. But be really careful, its really cheap think plastic, so when you cut, it might just rip apart. Good luck...

I just cut an oval shape on the front plastic. I didn't cut the top horizontal section at the top that snaps into the back cover. Evrything snaps back like stock.

If you have adjustable cam gears you need access to them to adjust them. see pic in thread 2.
