#17455, "Threw a rod in my engine."

Today I threw a rod in my 96GS.
I have two choices, I can buy a used 420a with 60k on it for $950 and have it put in for another $350.

My other option is to buy a friends 92GST for $1500.

I was wondering which would be the better choice? I dont think the swap would be very easy (im not even sure how possible it is), but Since I can get the whole care I would have everything I need.

I dont think anyone has ever put a 1g 4g63 in a 2g before, I would just like to have a little feed back on what you guys would do.

Thanks

Its really hard to put a 4G63 into a 420A. It will take way too much money to do, IMO. A bunch of people in my local DSM club have made 1G 4G63 swaps into thier 2G turbo cars. It actually turned out pretty well. Honestly if you dont care about looks i'd say get the 1G turbo, because unless you got extra cash to spare on the 2G NT engine and a turbo kit, its a nice way to have a fast car emoji

how'd you throw a rod? Over rev? nitrous? What got damaged? Try to check for engine parts at a salvage yard.

I just got the car back from the body shop. The damn thing has been burning oil for about 3 months. I was going down the highway and I heard clank, clank, clank. Pulled over and sure enough the damn thing was low on oil. Ihe funny thing is that I had just filled the gas tank up and decided to put in a quart of oil to top it off. I didnt think to check the dip stick... I was kinda in a hurry and didnt want to wait on it to settle down. It had 125k on it... Kinda pissed me off that I just got it back from the body shop... Someone rear ended me. I dont think i'll put that 1st gen 4g63 in it. Way too much of a headache, I would be a little easier than it is for most though seeing as how I would have the tranny the ecu and all the other crap.

Man do you people ever think about that swap before you start to ask about it? Think about it, IT WILL NOT WORK!! Take a picture of a 420A and a picture of a 4G63 and look at them, notice how everything is backwards? Go ahead think about it. Now do you thing it's worth the time, money, and all the bad words to do that? After you spend that much money you probably could buy a GSX, now you have turbo plus all wheel drive. You need to move motor mounts around, new tranny, new ECU, new wiring harness, etc. See now how it's really not worth it?

Sorry to be an ass but some times I don't think you people actually know what you are talkin about. Ya you know the engine codes but nobody seems to notice that EVERYTHING is backwards.

Granted you might have the ECU, tranny and engine but what about powersteering pump, AC shit (I know that shit aint needed), you throttle body cable from your gas pedal to the throttle body that throttle body is know on the other side of the engine, how you going to fix that one without buying another part which is probably expensive. Same goes for the tranny to the clutch pedal. Is it still worth it???

Sorry I am an ass just all you new people have to read the forum called: Thing We've Seen Before.

If you really are ready to spend that much money on trying to fit a 4G63 into the car where is what I would do: Rebuid the shit out of a 420A motor, pistons, rods, all the head work, etc. and boost the shit out of it. It will be easier and cheaper and it will beat the piss out of a stock 4G63 no questions asked.

Dude, I was going to buy an entire 1g eclipse and use the car as scrap to swap the engines because I can get the whole care for $1500 and have my uncle and dad swap the thing for me. Im probably gonna swap the engine with another 420a. I just wanted to get some feedback on what some of you guys would do if they had the same opportunity.

I also wanted to do it because my car is AT and I would have had to do a MT conversion at the same time because the 92GST is MT.

I don't think you are quite getting it EquinoX. swapping a motor from a 92 GS-T into a 2gnt, is insanely expensive and difficult (because EVERYTHING is different in the engine bay, not one thing is the same). it'd be cheaper to just buy a another 2gnt or maybe even a 2g turbo.
