#16867, "OK...so I killed my car..."

Well, yestrerday I was driving down the street minding my business, and I lost my steering, then my car turned off. After getting it towed to the closest AAA approved mechanic, I was told I blew a rod, which in tun screwed up by whole engine. They told me the last Eclipse they put a used engine in cost about 3,000. I think they're just trying to pull a fast one on me because I'm a girl. Any of you Florida DSMers know any good, TRUSTWORTHY shops in the Saint Augustine/Jacksonville area?

Well I am not in Jacksonville but....There is no way a new engine could cost $3000. I think its more like $1000. Luckily I havent had to look for a new engine so I havent ever looked for one. I am sure some people on here can help you and steer you in the right direction on your search for a new engine.

If you blew a rod then there is a chance that there is a hole in your block. WHen I blew a rod with NOS due to lack of fuel the rod punched a hole through the block near the starter. It wasn't an explosion it was just like an intake backfire POP! then smoke out the sides of the hood - but when I openned the hood it looked fine....until I saw the hole. I'd get a second opinion. I got a motor of a 97 auto with 30k for bout $700 off a place online. It should be cheaper now cuz I got mine back in 98...Also cuz our motor is a widely used one. $3000 is BS

Honestly you could get a Rebuild kit for you car and have it rebuilt for less money. unless you put the rod through the block. ironically i lived in St Auggie for a while but i never really saw any shops in that area. Jacksonville i know has a few good places. i just wish i knew what they were. I was actually thinking of going up to St Augustine today to visit some friends. i just dont think the money situation will allow me to. I hope you find one and good luck with everything

hey,
They guy that had my car before me ran it until the timing belt broke, He took it to a local shop and they found an engine with 4000 miles on it for 900 and the total after putting it in was only 1200.
I go to jacksonville about 13 times a year, to the mandarin area I think I know a few shops there If you live near mandarin.

I think he is right. I am thinking that the engine would gust go clunk and stop instead of the power steering and then the rod, or whatever. But that is my opinion I really couldn't tel you for sure.

sure you didnt loose your accessory belts? Lost power steering because of power steering belt, engine shut off cause you threw the alternator belt also...and the power drained... just my 2 cents... unless you saw smoke? or you have already did a visual inspection and ruled that out...

Well, the way it happened was...I was bassin out, and not really paying attention. I was slowing down at a light when my steering went out. That's apparently when my engine shut off, because that was the next thing i noticed.

When my rod blew through the block there was enough smoke coming from under the hood and out of the tail lights that you couldn't see.
