Here is what i went through with my nakayama CAI that i got off ebay. at first i wondered if it was the right one for my car too, but it seems to be working ok.
The first thing I noticed about my new intake was the it didn’t come with any directions, so for those of you that are in the same technical bracket as I was when I began my install, I shall attempt my first write-up. The installation was pretty simple. The only extra tools you will need are:
10 mm ratchet Tin Snips Flat head screwdriver Wheel removal tools and jack
Start by entirely removing your stock air box. Loosen the clamp that connects the plastic pipe to the throttle body (up near the windshield), then loosen the clamp that connects the plastic pipe to the airbox (down by the fuse box) and remove that. The only thing that should be connecting the stock plastic air pipe to the car is the crankcase ventilation hose (Like 3” long). This is attached by a weird fastener, but you should be able to pull it off by hand. Once you have the plastic pipe all the way off, pop open the air box, remove the filter, and you should see the (3) gold 10 mm bolts that hold the air box to the car. Loosen these and pull the bolts out. The air box actually snaps onto the car pretty tight so you’re going to have to wrestle with it a little to get it to snap off, but once it does, you’re ready to install your new CAI.
I tried to use mine (since this model is a 2-piece affair) as a short-ram intake first just to see if it would work, but it doesn’t. It is just a little too tall and I couldn’t get the hood closed without squashing it a little.
So, your first connection is going to be the shorter of the 2 metal pipes to the throttle body. This is also a perfect time to do the throttle body test (look on the 2gnt.com page) The side with the sharper angle (close to 90 degree angle) connects to the t/b. You will probably have to loosen and discard the battery tie-down mechanism in order to make it fit. Attach the first rubber coupler to the t/b and tighten it on with one of the provided clamps. Then slip the shorter of the two metal pipes into the coupler and fasten that with the other clamp (Remember, sharpest angle…it’s the only way it will really fit). The pipe should angle slightly down towards the ground.
Attach the crankcase ventilation hose and clamp it down at both ends with the provided clamps. This part is easy. You might have to cut the provided silicone hose a little. Just save the rest for another project.
Now for the fun part: The little arm the comes off the longer of the 2 metal pipes attaches near where the stock air box was bolted into. You will have to pull off one more gold 10 mm bolt. We will get to actually attaching it in a sec. Go ahead and attach the filter to the second (longer) metal pipe. You are also going to need to trim your splashguard a little at this point. I had to take my drivers side wheel off and jack the car up on that side to get a good angle on it. The splashguards are made of a pretty soft plastic so trimming them is not difficult. Simply looking at how the metal pipe (with the filter on it) wants to fit should tell you where you need to cut.
After you trim, slide the 2 metal pipes together using the second coupler, and slide the whole thing into place. Remember, the little arm that comes off the longer pipe should line up with one of the holes that held the stock air box in place. Here are 2 helpful hints for this part:
1) you might have to bend the arm to make it fit right
2) the bolt that you will use to attatch the pipe to the car is just a little too short. wrench the washers off of it for some extra length or get a longer bolt.
Once you have the pipe secured onto the car, just use the 2 remaining clamps to seal the 2 pipes together and you’re done!
I would recommend taking off the drivers side simulated brake scoop (the black plastic thing). It is held on by a clamp that you should feel if you reach under…no screws or anything. The filter sits directly behind the drivers side brake scoop so removing it not only looks cool, but allows more air to flow to the filter.
