#16175, "Underdrive Pulley Question."

Hello,
What brands of underdrive pulleys are people using, what are their thoughts as far as HP and generalized speed gains.. and what are people's thoughts on this auction; http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/aw-cgi/ebayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1808441455&r=0&t=0
Has anyone ever used a "Top Fuel" product? How reputable do you think they are? Vs. the A/FX what's better? Sorry for all the questions. Thanks in advance.

Gary

Ours is made from T6061 with 651 heat treat (harding), with a 304 stainless steel center bushing.

Well it looks like a nice clone of our AFX pully, but it has some important differences.

1) The most obvious on that I see is the lack of a steel center bushing. Our AFX pully has a stainless steel center bushing for a very important reason. Steel and Aluminum react chemically with each other in a process called galling. This reaction eats the material in the crank over time. We place a stainless steel bushing in the center of the crank to prevent crankshaft galling. This knock off has no bushing.

2)Another problem the lack of a bushing will cause is deformation. Keep in mind your pulley is press fit. When you press it on, it will roll tiny bits of aluminum up in it, as the aluminum is much harder than the steel. The stainless steel bushing in the AFX prevents this. This means this knock off is basically a disposable pulley, you take it off you get another one. The AFX is reusable, and should the bushing ever become damaged we will replace the bushing.

3) The performance gains are not in line with an AFX, meaning it is most likely larger in diameter.

But imitation is the greatest form of flatery, and I will worry when they make one as good as ours, and they haven't yet. We are also proud to say made in the good ol US of A!
