On the "Stages" page, it says that a K&N cone filter on the end of the stock intake is a good, cheap way to get more air into the engine. How do you mount the cone, though?

Do you cut the intake hose off so that the flexible part is gone, then clamp on the filter, or does the filter go where the stock airbox is?

If the cone goes where the stock airbox is, won't you need a custom mount to hold the filter?

What I would do is take off your airbox completely. Remove stock plastic piping too. Go to home depot and get you some PVC piping and use elbows and other parts and make your own "cold air" pipe and put the K&N filter on there. Oh, and for connecting the setup to your throttle body just get some rubber flanges with some screw-down clamps (like intercooler piping rubber flanges) All of this can probably be bought at Home Depot or Loews for about $20 in parts tops. Filter is prolly $45-50 at ur local auto parts place. Try to get the filter with the hole on the end, not the closed up one though. Does the exact same thing as an aftermarket CAI such as AEM or Injen. Try to make the piping with the elbows to where the cone ends up down below right behind your drivers side foglite cover, then remove your fog lite covers (the outer larger ones) and the air will go directly into your K&N setup and directly into the engine. Any more questions just ask.

I have been going back an forth in my head about this for a while now. Building a CAI myself is a distinct possibility, but I think that I will use ABS plastic instead of PVC. PVC is only rated to 140F, then it breaks down and releases hydrochloric acid. ABS has a working temp of 160F and can take 210F for short times. It has no chlorine in it, so it won't release any HCl. I have heard that Home Depot also carries ABS tubing, which is black instead of white like PVC. I am still thinking about it.

GS99 has the idea that I was thinking about most recently. It looks like he just clamped the filter on the end of the stock intake pipe. I don't understand what holds up the filter, though. Since it is on the flexible tube, it seems like it will bounce up and down while you are driving and beat the hell out of the filter.
