It would be tough, expensive, time consuming. Expensive as you will pay quite a bit more for that conversion then you did for the car. Time consuming as you wont see your car for months. But hey if you have money anything can be done.

I'm sure you could use the GSX drivetrain somehow since it would swap on fairly easily, BUT you have to swap tranny and engine also which would be a bitch and a waste of time/money. If you insist on RWD then get a GSX and disable the front wheels somehow, that'd probably be the easiest most realistic way of accomplishing this, but at that point I'd rather have 4WD.

I heard of someone doing this, not necesarrily to an eclipse. They paid mad cash to get this done. Now if you were going to do all the work yourself then it might not be so bad. But if you were going to pay a shop to do then it will cost you.

You can't do it with the stock frame. You'd have to rotate the engine 90* in the bay, find a RWD tranny that will mate with our engine, and fabricate an entire driveline. You can kiss your AC and PS goodbye, as well as $8-10,000

Call Buschur and ask him. He's got a rwd 8 sec Eclipse. My guess is at least $8-10k, and it would still be "stock slow". Cool idea though.

Well, from what I read somewhere, the new Neon...the SRT-4 I think it is will be a RWD car. If that's so...then your RWD Eclipse may not be THAT far away, but as for right now....too expensive unless you have the money to throw away.

Nope Neon SRT is still going to be FWD.

Buscher's RWD is on a tube chassie so no similarities exist between that car and ours. The only thing it has in common with DSM is the body styling and a 4G63.

The rear differential could be used from a GS-X. You could get all rear parts from a GS-X. As for trans... the GS-X trans will not bolt up to our motor. Not sure how you would accoumplish this. You would need some trans and a LOT of custom work to fab drivetrain and driveshaft. and custom work on a trans.

I'd rather put $9000 towards the purchase of a reliable GSX which would have replacement parts available for purchase, not to mention superior handling. RWD is good for draggin' and that's about it.

If you want RWD just get a 240SX or a hachiroku. It's probably better to make it AWD. And if you know how to drive FF you can a FF car go fast. I'm been learning how to master FF eversince I got my car and I can even drift it. Those FR guys can call it assdragging if they want but it's still drifting to me.

Just me making some notes on some information being thrown around again.

You can not convert a GSX to rwd. It is a fwd drivetrain. If you disable the front wheels, you lose the rear. That is how it works. Someone correct me if they think I am wrong. Please.

RWD is for more than drag. When an object accelerates all the weight shifts backwards whereas when it brakes all the weight shifts forward. Standard physics. Having fwd goes against standard convention. When you launch your car you are unloading the weight over the drive tires hence causing a loss of traction.

Also note on a rwd car you only have to ask the front tires to turn where as on a fwd car it has to attempt to turn and steer.

Fwd was invented for cost and packaging reasons. It allows for more interior space and better packaging of the car by doing away with the driveshaft as well as associated hardware. This saves money and makes more room.

That being said, modern technology and advancements have allowed for the possibility of a properly sorted fwd car that can match the handling prowess and performance of a rwd car. Witness the Type R. I give credit where credit is due and I am well impressed with what has been accomplished on the Type R in terms of handling ability. There is also the case whereas the car can easily exceed the ability of the driver.

The biggest complication I can see in converting our car into a rwd platform is the hacking up of your rear chassis to accomodate the drivetrain. The engine will have to be turned as mentioned which will probably cost you all of the creature comforts. It could be possible to use a chevy or ford rear end from a mustang or camaro mated to our engine with a proper adapter (which does not exist) constructed to do so. The advantages you would get from all this work would really not be worth it unless you intended to go full race.

In the end you would be better off selling your car and buying a GSX if you truly want a RWD Eclipse. It is the closest you will get and in my mind more preferable anyway.
