Figured I'd show everyone EXACTLY how much of a difference the new design made....

I'm having the same problem as many of you others are having right now. (loud lifters during a cold morning startup)

I'm just waiting to spend the money on the PT Cruiser valvetrain upgrade.

Here's some more information that a gathered:

"The DOHC engine suffers from oil aeration issues that adversely affect engine performance. The OEM lifters trap this aerated oil and fail to pump up properly negatively affecting engine performance at high RPM usage. The OEM rocker arms also tend to develop longitudinal cracks at speeds at or above 7400 RPM. This usually isn't an issue until a missed shift occurs or an aftermarket computer is installed.

The good news is that the PT Cruiser 2.4L valve train is a direct swap for Neon DOHC motors. The PT valve train incorporates bleed holes in the lifters for the aerated oil and also incorporates a stronger rocker arm design. The PT parts are also superceded in service channels making these upgrades legal for stock class competition like SCCA showroom stock club racing or Solo II.

OEM vs. PT Comparisons

The stronger PT design is the left rocker of each pair. The cracks develop on the OEM rocker at the point it contacts the valve stem.

The PT hydraulic lifter has a bleed hole to combat aerated oil. The PT lifter is shown on the right."

I am having the same problem with the ticking in the engine I have had it apart twice in the last two weeks. first I was told it was lifters, SO I got the pt style lifters from howell. Guess what it still does it. there isnt a loss in power but it is pretty loud and it does it all the time whether it is warmed up or cold. and from idle to 2000 rpms is when you can really hear it. Otherwise unnoticeable. Any ideas. I was also told it could be a wrist pin but I am a little sceptical due to the fact that I just replace the pistons with JE 9:1 compression pistons and crower rods. I am really clueless. Could anyone help me.
