#1467, "computer chip"

I just bought a '99 Eclipse, and I'm new to modifying my car. I wanted to find out if my car already has a performance chip installed. How do I check that? If I don't already have one, what would be a good one to buy?

A performance chip for the 2G NT eclipse does not exist yet. Howell Automotive is supposedly working on one though, so stay tuned...

Jetchip.com apparently makes some that will increase the 2GNT by 8-10 hp.

I don't trust JET as far as I can throw my car. They have compaired JET's modified code to the factory ECU code and there were no differences. For example someone on the board talked to a tech at JET and was told that he would need to have the trouble code that was stored in his ECU cleared before they could work on the ECU. 1. Disconnectoing the battery for a short period of time will clear the codes. Which I'm sure it will be disconnected during shipping to them. 2. They are going to reprogram my ECU, but they can't clear the trouble codes out of it? Not exactly instilling my supreme faith in their abilities. 3. I've never seen a (reputable) dyno sheet showing their product producing any power gains. So if I were you I wouldn't waste my money on JET.

Can our ECU be modified to get more HP out of our motor? Yes. Has anyone done it that I know of... No. But Gary Howell at AFX / Howell Automotive is working on it though so sit tight.

Your other option is to get a S-AFC and tune yourself, you won't get as much as a fully reprogrammed ECU but you should probably see 5hp at the wheels if tuned right.

haha I heard the Jetchip will actually decrease performance. Don't go with the Jetchip, it's one of those big no no's I've been hearing about for so long on this board.
