Is it ok to drive with overdrive on all the time or should that only be on when driving over 50mph?

Its fine. Having it in drive will keep it in third gear longer thats about all I know.....


I usually drive in D in town under 45 just to have the RPMs up there a litle more.

O/D is basically your high gear. Listen to the car and watch your tach. If the rpm's get up too high in 3rd, hit it in O/D. The car will shift into high gear, then converter will go int lockup and rpms will drop pretty low at a constant speed. For a lot of stop and go aka in town/city driving, leave it off. It is mainly for long roads with a 45 mph or higher limit, where you won't do much stopping. Like I said tho, I use mine in the city at times if I am on a long road without many lights and I see the tach move up.

dude if u arent racing dont keep the o/d off ... let the engine relax ... it will make your block feel better and last longer ... cant argue with that

i watch the tach. it seems after i did the AFX pulley mod i can go to 60 mph comfortably wit it on.

Don't you guys mean, when you ARE racing keep the overdrive button off, so that you can get the RPM's higher? and if you are not racing keep the o/d on, to save fuel??

I heard from Satan that if you leave it on all the time it causes "abnormal wear" in the tranny. This is what they told me after the tranny went out in my old RS (97) The car only had 36,000 miles in it. I dont know of anything that could make a tranny wear out that fast but thats what they said.

Mitsubishi recommends keeping O/D off when driving under 50mph and on whern driving over 50 mph. They say this keeps the tranny from making a lot of unnecessary shifts, which should prolong the life of it.

o/d off normal stop and go driving for me.

put it on if on highway.. and over 50s

O/D will hurt your tranny after long periods of use, especially if you leave it on all the time. I learned this from my old car, a 91maxima, i hardly ever drove with O/D off, i just sold it, but for the past 6 months of having it the tranny was shot, most likely due to overdrive being left on.

Whoa, so now I'm confuses guys, in the manual it says to to not go over 50 if you have overdrive off, that's why I always have left overdrive on.

Are you guys saying that it's better for me and the turbo system to be running on 3 gears all the time in the city instead of 4?

i think most cars make the final gear shift at 50 mph, which is why they say that's where you get the best gas mileage. Aside from that, with o/d off the tranny won't shift as much, but it will stay at higher engine speeds which means worse mileage and more stress on the motor. I only leave it off if i want more power, don't know whats worse

Thanks for the help. For the past few weeks i have left my o/d on all the time because im usually going over 45. So i guess its safe. It also helps with gas mileage. Thanks for the help everyone.
