#13826, "crazy idea time! post your crazy mod ideas"

Sometimes, the crazy performance modification ideas we think of or hear from other people just actually might work. Well, only sometimes emoji

So, I want everyone to post their crazy/wacky/"never thought of that before"/"you must be nuts" ideas for improving power from our engines. I have 4 of them top of my head. One I actualy tried and it didn't work at all, one I thought up myself (but it isn't very original), the other two (one of which I'll share later) I heard from someone else and they should actually work.

Ok, the one that didn't work, make a resonance chamber on the cold air intake. The theory being the chamber will give more HP at a certain RPM range, dependign on how big the resonator is. Well, it did nothing.

Here's the other one. You get a second washer fluid reservoir filled it with pure methanol or ethanol, another washer fluid pump and spray nozzle, and put the spray nozzle just before or just inside the air filter. It would be a poor man's nitrous/water injection setup. The alcohol would expand and cool the air going into the engine, and the ethanol would also be combustable which helps too.

I've got two others. Here's one I mentioned before. Bore out the cylinders just 2 thousandths or so over what you normally would, then use dykes rings instead of regular compression rings. You'd have to replace the rings every 10,000 miles or so (boo hoo, do you want to go fast or not?) but it would reduce the friction between the pistons and cylinder walls, thus giving you more power.

One more crazy idea left, I'll save it for later emoji

I was talking with my sister's boyfriend (engineer) and he told me to try the resonance chamber intake. He went into detail about how the larger chamber should lower the temp of the air and help to increase the airflow for more power. I never tried it but knowing that you have Todd, I think I'll skip it.

Some kid here in the local club attached a piece of air duct piping to his intake. He routed it down next to one of the foglights and stuck the end out of a opening in the front bumper. He put pantie-hose over the opening to keep rocks from getting into the pipe. He swears it added power emoji

Somthing i've always wnated to try is to get an electrict leaf blower (i think you know where i'm going with thi emoji) and mount it in the engine with a secondary intake tube (tieing into the standard intake) and hook the power to a push button. the kind that need to be held down to work. and under wot press the button, home made turbo lol

Well I wasn't going to mention this one but my uncle got a blower from an airplane that is used to pressurize the cabin of a plane. I hooked it up to my old car before I had this one. It was a 1993 4 door cavalier with an 8V 2.2L engine. I hooked it up direct into the intake and straped a K&N on the intake of the compressor. The car felt a TINY bit faster in the top end during the first 2 gears. Once I hit about 65 mph the hood flew up because of the position of the blower had the hood up a little and the latch was loose on the hood. :o Well that car was a beater anyways so I traded it in for my eclipse.

I hooked it up to the eclipse about 6 months after I got it and there was PLENTY of room with the stock airbox removed so no chance of pulling an Evan and having the hood fly up on the eclipse. emoji

Well there was NO difference AT ALL with the blower on or off through the whole RPM range. I have been meaning to hook up a pressure gauge and see if it actually adds possitive pressure or just runs the air in the manifold at atmosphereic pressure which is what the pump is used for on planes.

get a bunch of those air cans that you use to dust things and rig up somethign to spray that into the intake.. also need some sort of heater because those things get cold and it slows how much air comes out when they do... emoji AKA - Cheap NOS.

Washer fluid reservoir, fuel pump, oil/tran cooler, some hoses, etc and run a cooling system for my intake(tube, TB, manifold...) that would keep the intake air cool.

In response to Reply # 0

old skool V8 trick.

this is basically a really thick (1/4"-3/4") intake-manifold-to-head gasket made of a thermally non-conductive material. This way the thermal energy from the engine block does not get to the intake manifold, which will stay cooler, maintaining a cooler (denser) intake charge, thereby making more power. There is also a benefit from lenghtening the intake path, which should gain some torque.

I'm looking into this on the side. I'll post some references on this later. If there is enough interest, we should go for it.

Weld in some short pipes from the plenum after the TB down to just before the injectors and install some butterfly valves. The butterflies would open at a certain rpm, giving the intake air a shorter path and thus improve high rpm power. The pipes would have to be radiused down to minimize stalling and maximize the flow rate.

This would be better than the typical sheet-metal-intake-manifolds, which kill low rpm torque. The SMIM would only be good for racing when you only use high rpm, but would suck on the street.

Good, now here's crazy idea #2

You're going to love this one emoji

Take the crankcase breather line (or lines, if there are more than one) and run it to the collector of your header, with a PCV valve to prevent exhaust gas from going back up the line.

Now, I know what you're thinking, this is just like putting that little K&N filter and catch can on it to keep the intake charge cooler, except your running it before the cat to prevent emissions, right? Ehh, no wrong.

An engine works on a pressure differential. If the air in the crankcase below the piston is at a lower pressure than it would normally be, then it will be easier for the piston to move down during the power stroke (greater pressure diffeential between the two sides), and you should gain more HP, about 5-10%. The breather line has to be placed at the proper point, right at (or inside, I forget exactly) the collector of your header.

This way, the tube is emptying at a point in the header which acts like a venturi, so the header/exhaust actually sucks the air out of the crankcase, allowing it's pressure to drop.

Or, you could hook up a very small vacuum pump (belt driven/electrical) instead, that technically should do the same thing.

How's that for a crazy idea. It should actually work, but I think it is illegal to do that to the crankcase in some forms of racing.

when you guys look at your winshield their is a plastic cover that the wipers attach to with "intake" holes on the drivers side. I wanted to cut into that from the engine bay and make a "ram" air style cold air intake! I'll try it after I buy a "spare" intake for when it rains/snows! Gotta love Chicago's weather

You could make an intake like that on wind tunnels, with the vanes and everything, that would increase the intake speed. You could also pump some kind of refrigerent into the vanes to cool the air, water would probably work too.

I wanna convert one to CNG... Bigass turbo busses run on it, Honda civics run on it, and the Dodge Charger R/T Concept makes 325hp on CNG (using the Jeep Grand Cherokee's 4.7 v8 and a supercharger). I've even heard rumors of CNG Mitsubishi 4g63 forklifts.

Not sure what you could do for racegas or to crank up the boost, but shit, I wouldn't mind driving a emissions clean car whose fuel cost half as much as gasoline.

Well, it is the Delorean. As for the crazy PCV idea in the headers, my only concern is that it would be too much vacuum and suck the oil up the PCV like a drinking straw. Might wanna put a vacuum gauge on the line to make sure it doesn't happen.

Im pretty sure the only crazy mod there is, is to add as many stickers as possible to your car which is obvious. My idea to increase HP by some much is to add stickers inside car and in engine bay. you could fit a lot of stickers in there. Im pretty sure u can get like 1000 stickers at least on your car and gain another 10,000 HP at least.

Another one, you could make a direct fuel injection system. It would take a lot of tuning with a stand-alone computer system, but you get 20% more power and fuel economy.

I know i am a little late for this post... I was at my local muffler shop getting some prices on some pipe bends for a custom CAI. And the guy asked if i have ever tried using dry ice... He explained that this is an old V8 trick. Basically rig up a small box under our intakes and put a chunk of dry ice in it... Obviously this would be a mod for when you went to the track, and i think it would be easier for those of us with the short rams.. But it sounded like pretty simple idea

This isn't "Crazy", but it is crazy. Get 12.5 comp pistons, then mill to get 14.5 comp. That would give you a 20% inc. in power. Not for turbos unless you get some crazy strong internals. Do you think the engine, with the howell rebuild kit, could hold? N/A of course!

Haha ok ok here's crazier one, I wanna swap out the good ol' 420 for a 3 rotor rotary engine (20b) and turbo charge that sucka, with the awd. Gahahah I saw this one option video and they had that in a 86 and it was pushing 600 HP. Haha when you see it accelerate on the freeway it's rediculous.

on a more fictional note, u could do what they did in back to the future III and hook up your car to train tracks and have the train push...but instead of using that kind of train, use one of those super speed trains that use magnets or whatever it is and just hang on for the ride. hey...u wont have to use gas, turbo, nos or anything. just hope theres no cow in the way.

Dude, rotors don't have cams!!! He probably P and P the motor and is running hella crazy comp ratio.
I'm trying to convince my freind into letting me get under his gs-x and playing with the center diff. to make his car rear wheel drive! SCC did that with thier Subie (except front wheel). What the hell you need a V8 for? Power to weight ratio man! You can make the same power with 4g63/420 with half the weight! Unless its torque your talking about...?

Engine mods-
RS Akimoto short (P.O.S.!) intake, Greddy Sport Cat-back ex.
Suspension-
Ground Control Coil-overs,KYB AGX shocks, RS Akimoto strut bar(front) TSW Trouphies 18x8,Nitto 555's.
Exterior-
Paint! C.F. Hood, Z3 fenders, Street Fighter Gen 2

Heres a good one. Take the engine and move it to the back for a mid-engine 420 eclipse. Probably would have to take the suspension components and switch em.

I was actually thinking about doing this, not sure about it though. I'm gonna have to do some research. Even FWD 350 small block would be fast as hell. more traction on the front wheels, wince it's not mid-engine.

And torque is a key factor in the quarter mile. The eclipse is designed for mid-range, low end power would help the acceleration a considerable amount.
