#137664, "The advantages of using 4G63 valve spring vs 420a springs; specs"

just for future searchers;

I've always contended that the 4G63T springs were a great "inexpensive" upgrade to our stocker springs but I never posted specs so I thought I would post them up here (info courtesy of BogusSVO on dsmtuners);

420a

41 @ 1.600 closed
105 @ 1.250 open

4G63T
66 @ 1.575 closed
160 @ 1.240 open

While the measurements aren't exactly at the same point, you can see that its obvious that the 4G63T spring is a much stronger spring.

For those that don't know, these springs are used as a direct replacement for our springs.

No caveats? No issues with uncompressed height, compressed height, inner diameter? If so, that is great information.

Nope. None. I've run these on lots of set-ups and the bind numbers are well within any cams out there.

1G and 2G 4G63 springs would work fine?

Ive been running 4g63 springs for a while now and if they are a dirrect replacement then could we run the evo 8 springs in the 420a? The evo 8's are a stock replacement for the 4g63 so they should work on the 420a too? Anyone ever try this?

Haha, funny you should mention this.

What reminded me to post this up, was that I was doing some research on the EVO beehives. In actuality, you can use the EVO's (using our keepers with EVO retainers), but the numbers come out not looking so good. They are much weacker than the stock 4g63's (I believe it was 115 @1.25 vs the 160 @ 1.25).

Now do the beehives have some properties that allow for progressive spring rate? Yeah, But I don't think it will equal close to just the stock 4G63's. Lighter, yes, but I'm not sold on it being an advantage overall (as well as the fact that the coil bind is pretty tight to a Crower 3 - by the math, not by actual testing. I didn't do any because I pulled out of the idea).

Now, I'm currently checking on some other stock beehives that have some interesting numbers so we'll see where those go........
