My brother has a 97 GSX and is having a problem with third gear. He was shifting into third at a normal rpm. There was a clattering noise that was constint, and the 3rd gear pull was weak. It goes in and out of the gears fine including 3rd. Pulls normal in all gears but 3rd. The clattering is now constint in 3rd. Transfer case or Transmission? The dealer in his area is weak on the GSX side of the house.

Transmission. They are notoriously problematic in both the gst and gsx. Could be a engagement gear, maybe a shift fork. Hope that helps.
