#136176, "Battery Light in cluster came on ?!"

Hey guys, I had the battery light in my cluster come on yesterday on my way over to my friends house to help him with his car, and I am not sure why it is on.
I have checked both terminals on the battery-they are both tight, I checked the connections on the starter and alternator-Both good.
I was wondering if anyone here has dealt with this problem before as a search yielded no results.

The light is in no way affecting the performance of the vehicle, but I would like to know why it came on and how to get it to go away since it now is on all the time.

Most likely your alternator is on its way out. If it only happened yesterday, I'd give it a couple more days, I bet you your running on just battery. I used to pop belts off my alternator and when it first happened I didn't know what had happened and didn't think much of it until the battery light was on and the fuel pump struggled to do its job. Take it to a local AutoZone or something, have them run a alternator test. Should read between high 13v to 14.5Volts. If not, then its done for.

I've been there. I'm pretty sure I have at least one spare laying around somewhere. If it does end up being the alternator, shoot me a pm and I'll hunt it down and get it tested. If it still works right, I can cut you a break for $10 plus shipping to get you back on the road. It might take a few days to hunt it down though.

Hey man, thanks for the offer, but I do not need it.

I forgot to update this thread... but the alternator did take a crap on me.
killed my battery so bad that I had to triple trickle charge it to bring it back, also killed my spare battery, and my buddies Optima yellow top before i was able to get the new alternator and belt put back in.

Not good, but at least you got it figured out.

I was going to say that I had it on good word from 4g63 owners that the battery light is related to power steering :p. Wes Tank knows what I am referring to.

But back on subject, always best to get the alternator checked asap when you see this happening to prevent killing multiple batteries.

its an internally regulated alternator. the voltage regulator is built into the alternator

i would check to make sure your alternator is charging. if you have a digital muti meter, test the voltage at the battery with the car running and it should be around 14volts. any lower and you alt is prob on its way out

another thing i forgot to mention is if your voltage reads fine with the car running, check the plug at the alt for corrosion. one of the wires goes to the battery light so if the connection is bad then that will cause the light to turn on
