Ok I have been trying to get this car running for about two months. I was driving home from work one day and it just randomly shut off and would not start again. I assumed it was the fuel pump cause I could not hear it prime any more. What it is doing is it will crank over but not start. it will spit and sputter like it wants to start but doesnt unless you pat the gas like a old carb vehicle. Once it finally does decide to start, it will idle ok but wont rev past 2500-3500 RPMS without cutting out and dieing. WHen it starts to cut out the cel and battery light flicker. the codes it is throwing are P1493, and P0117. THese codes were thrown BEFORE it decided to die on me on the way home from work. I have checked the timing and it is good.

I have seen some threads about those codes before and It said since the 420A in a eclipse doesnt have a battery temp sensor that the PCM is bad. Well I googled the PCM and all that kept popping up is the ECU. So what I have done so far is changed the fuel pump, fuel filter, crank position sensor, and ordered a ECU (has not arrived yet to test.)

Is this a common problem with the 420A engine?

I will be making a video here soon to show this issue.

Stop wasting money and throwing parts at it.

Start by diagnosing what is really happening.

Fuel pressures? Spark test? Test coil/wires/plugs. There are plenty of things you need to do prior to spending hundreds of dollars hoping to fix the problem.

I forgot to mention, It has new plug wires, plugs, and temp sensor if that helps. Fuel pressure is good as well.

*UPDATE*

Ok I got the new ECU today and the old codes are now gone and battery light is off. The car will now start and idle but throwing code P1390 which means the timing is off by a tooth. I checked it at the cams and it was dead on but I have NOT check it at the crank. I have added a video to the first post that shows that its doing today.

Have you checked the air to fuel ratio?
