#129539, "96 Talon sputters then stalls once warm"

Hey guys, before you flame me about the common hot start issues read what I have to say.

I have a 1996 Eagle Talon N/T 2.0 5 speed. The vehicle runs awesome- until it gets to operating temperature. Once that happens it sputters, then dies. It acts as though it has ran out of gas, however it hasn't. So anyway, I have checked all of the most likely culprits, Coolant Temp Sensor, all the plugs, all the wires, and the coil pack. Really at a loss at this point. The car seems to have good everything however I have not tested fuel pressure, but I hear the fuel pump.

Anyone ever have this happen and have any ideas for me?
Thanks
Scott

Im not a genius, but I want to throw this out for arguments sake. Is your Fuel pressure good? Once the fuel pump warms up it could be failing. Best of luck on hunting it down.

Try checking the oxygen sensor too.

Crankshaft Position Sensor was the culprit. Virtually turned into powder as I removed it... Then I get a call from a bank saying that my junkyard car has a lien and they are going to take it away from me. I just invested like 500 bucks into this car and they are going to take it away in a better condition so the jackass that sold it to the junk yard will have less of a debt? Probably going to break out the sledge...

Well it also wont start back up until it is all the way cooled off, but during the time in which it is cooling I can hear the fuel pump prime when I turn the key. It doesn't sound weird or anything, but I finally have a day off tomorrow so I will be able to investigate a little further.

So now that I have replaced the plugs, the wires, and the coil, what exactly drives the coil? I am not completely sure that it is due to a lack of spark, however I can't seem to find an ignitor or a power transistor, and that's what my mechanic said was probably wrong. Based on what I see here, I don't have a power transistor. Can't seem to find good electrical diagrams. arrg, I'm gonna rip my hear out haha
thanks

The coil is directly driven by the ecu from the cam and crank signals. There is no ignitor in our system

Well I went through the car today and though my mechanic told me it is most likely a fuel related issue, upon having someone prime the pump (turning the key on and off) and the pressure valve pushed in with a screw driver, plenty of gas spits out at me. However, when the car wont start its having little to no spark.

Cam sensor was covered in oil due to leaky valve cover gasket. Can't get the Crank sensor off for some reason to inspect. Does that sensor only have one bolt on it? I can only find one and it wasent budging off, but I didn't try to pry it or anything...

On another note, if I turn the heat off the RPMS will drop and the car will start to die, the second I turn the heat back on it will go back to idle, then die. Perhaps a strange coincidence?
THANKS FOR THE REPLIES!
Scott

I think the RPM's changing with the heat on and off is unrelated and more of a power allocation issue. I know with my car the RPM's during idle will abruptly change and then recorect if I put the heat on, or th rear defroster, or open both windows at the same time, etc.

Well I finally got access to a garage so I don't have to work in the snow bank anymore... That should make changing the crankshaft angle sensor a little easier tomorrow. Hoping that that is my problem as I checked the fuel lines and pump today.. Although rusty, I am getting desirable fuel pressure and realized that it's a spark issue. Someone else on this forum had a similar problem and they replaced the crank angle sensor and it fixed their issue. I will follow up tomorrow evening in case anyone else ever runs into this bastard of a problem. haha
Thanks for all the help guys
Scott
