Ok, I just picked up a 98 rs 140k miles very clean car.In the ad he stated the car had fuel injector issues but was recently cleaned and ran fine. i took it for a test drive and it studderd only under heavy load or full throttle for a sec more like a hicup then smoothed out. the car seems like it's lacking a bit of torque but i figured maybe a fuel filter or a spark issue. oil looked clean, thought ok cool. bought the car. now i didn't check the water over flow untill i was halfway thru doing plug wires and valve cover gasket the next day. noticed there was about a quart of oil in there. mixed obviously, not a good sign. popped the cap and there's a hint of residue. now i am having a head gasket thrown on in a few days by a friend of mine who works on dsm's. but i'm curious if the head always needs to be resurfaced or do these engines get lucky and just need the gasket put on? I come from a long history of honda builds so i have no clue on anything mitsu.
also i think a plug wire was arc'n out since there was a half inch white arc line at the bottom of the boot and the plugs looked nasty so i don't think the gasket issue was making is hicup, also for people needing more info the car never over heated once on me driving it around. temp was always at below half or way less. not even sure the gauge is reading right due to the oil in there.

Have you done a compression test and a leakdown test yet?
Those should give you a pretty clear indicator of whether its a HG or not, but if theres oil in the coolant...
Also, I am of the understanding that the head should always be checked for flatness by a machine shop, and corrected if needed. Thats what I practice and since the head is off, it can save a whole lot of headaches down the road.

Agreed 100%.
Everytime I have ever done a head gasket I have had the head checked for straightness and on every one of them they have needed milled at least a little bit.

no smell, just oil getting into water.can feel a loss in power. checked back of block, oil seeping from back of block on drivers side at the head gasket.
