#128702, "Can a evo tranny be bolted up to a 420a block?"

Im just wondering can a evo tranny be bolted up to the 420a block. Like im talking about the evo 4 and up since the engine is on the same side. Has anyone actualy done the awd conversion to the eclipse rs/gs or talon esi im curious to know iv seen a few threads about this on another website, shouldnt it be a easy install once the tranny is setup due to the fact that the rear subframe can be put on with a few mods.

Oh man.

Just because the trans is on the same side, does not mean it will bolt up to a completely different motor.

No.

Theoretically, it can be made to happen. There are transmission adapter plates. But again, not worth it.

I'm broke, it's broken. I'm broke because it's broken. It's broken because I'm broke.

why in the world would you wanna do all that work to make a 420a awd when for a little more you could just get the awd turbo gsx. cheaper and alot easier in the long run. I like my 420a just as much as all the other 420a guys do but sometimes the quote "sell it and buy a gsx" just makes sense in these type of situations. If you want a better fwd transmission you should look into the 98 dodge neon r/t mtx tranny they have better gear ratios for our motors.

Maybe some people would just like to do something out of the norm. Something a little different. If I had the money I would deffinately do it. Why not. You would be recognised by everyone in the automotive industry for doing something no one has done yet and further more proven all the gsx/tsi guys that maybe we just don't want to sell our cars and buy one just like theirs. I for one know that I love my NA and yeah i would like a gsx or a tsi one day but you can bet your ass that i'll still be driving my esi a whole lot more! just my .02.

The point really is, WHY BOTHER? The cost far outweighs the potential benefits. If you want to throw a ton of money at something that doesn't need to be done have at it. The NVT-350 is known for being a pretty stout transmission as long as you don't drive like a ham fisted idiot and do burnouts all the time.

if you wanna do that, go get the awd tranny from the caravan and the rest from a 2g GSX atleast then you'd be alot closer and cheaper then spending all that cash to adapt an evo tranny to the 420a setup.

Along with making new trans mounts because the caravan trans mounts don't line up with the eclipse mounts. You have to customize the front crossmember to fit the transfer case because the GSX one would be backwards, and heaven forbid you mess that up because then you'd lose chassis rigidity and the car would handle like ass on a stick. You also need to change the fuel tank and a large portion of the rear suspension for the AWD components, etc. etc. etc.

By the time it's all said and done you could have bought a couple of decent GSX/TSI AWD's

Can it be done? Yes, with an exorbitant amount of money and insanity.

Is it worth it? IMO, not by a longshot.

This has beaten like a dead horse. The bottom line is NO an Evo tranny does not bolt up to a 420a block.
