#128555, "My new 95 GS...Unique Engine Prob.....long story"
Nov-04-09 06:58 PM by EAGLE192

Well... i got lucky and picked up a 95 gs...it has everything like, power windows, and locks, ABS 4 disc brakes, rear wiper, everything. plus it red, for 700.

it has 145,000 miles and i bought it with the understanding that it needed a new coil pack...but that wasnt the issue. the funny thing is the car would run excellent with no check engine light only when the coolant temp sensor and upstream O2 sensor was unplugged. That idea was killing me. so i changed them then inpected the wire harness, everywhere still no clue. every time i would drive it with everything plugged up...it was act like it was misfiring and bogging...stumble through the low rpm's then bursting into action at 5 grand....like a huge jolt...i would churp tires...lol

but one day i was driving it with everything unplugged ( O2 sensor and cts) then all of sudden i notice that it started shooting oil out the little nozzle that on the top of the valve cover....then it would have this huge cloud of smoke coming out of the exhuast....i continued to drive cause i was nowhere near home...but before i got home the car overheated then shut of...i thought it was locked up,cause the starter would just not do anything, plus the coolant was broiling. so i left it there and came back the next day and now the engine turns over but right before it starts it locks again then i have to wait till it cools to turn it over.

What i think happen was something to do with the rings and cylinder walls. so im thinking i just need a new bottom end.
In all my DSM'S I've never come accross something like this. its like there's always something new.

Kind of hard to read. Sounds to me like your boned.

What color smoke?

I ask because I bought my Eclipse for $350 because it overheated and died. Mine had warped the head and blew the gasket (white smoke reported from previous owner), but I also had other nuisance issues (crud everywhere).

What I did since I did not observe the last moments that my car had, I pulled the head for it to be machined for a new HG. I also pulled the oil pan off to inspect the rod bearings as it had no oil on the dipstick (lucked out, they were good), and pulled the pistons to inspect the rings and ring lands (all checked out and are clean now), but what was causing my crud buildup was likely attributed to ring orientation not properly set up (ring gaps 1cm away from each other) causing quite a bit of blow-by forcing oil and stuff everywhere into the intake.

I don't know if you need to do all of that, but maybe since I'm taking my time I just went overkill.

You can bring it back to life! Just take your time and make sure everything is right.

It's probably not a new problem, just a new look at an old one! And I didn't know ours came with ABS...

Well there could've been something to fix beforehand, but it sure sounds like your engine's toast at this point. Did you ever throw a scanner on it when everything was plugged in and it was acting up? There's been numerous instances of 95 ECU's going bad, maybe there was something to do with that that it was freaking out.

sounds like rings or ring landings are shot. i blew my landings on my 95 gs back in june and it led to quite a bit of oil shooting out the valve cover. it even lead to my valve cover gasket blowing as well. its time to remove your head and inspect before things get too bad. if this is your problem and you continue to drive, be prepared to destroy your block. i was fortunate enough to be able to tear my motor apart day after the oil problem to discover this before destroying my cylinder walls.

Ouch...

Hopefully he is like me, my rings were oriented wrong. Cylinder walls were good, but had burn marks down the piston.

When I blew my old motor I had the same thing happen. I also believe I cracked a ring land in cylinder four as I had no compression (dont know for sure because I never did a tear down) and when my motor ran there were tons of gases and oil coming out of the breather lines.

Good luck!

You have a blown engine. Pull it, take it apart and see what you can salvage.

Loads of different things.

Oil starvation
Overheating
Detonation
Pre-ignition
Ring flutter
Broken rods
Broken wristpins....

The list goes on.

I'm broke, it's broken. I'm broke because it's broken. It's broken because I'm broke.

Well today i decided to take the head off, when i did i found that there was a chip of the piston gone!!.....so i guess that was the reason for me shooting oil, and hesitation..

When i was taking the head off i notice that half of the job was already done because some bolts were missing..then i saw that there was a new head gasket. So that means that the last person that had the car did the head gasket......i wonder if i can reuse it cause it looks fairly new.

But anyways i wonder how the piston could get chipped like that? Like a big chip is gone on the side

Definitely buy a new HG. And like Babz said, make sure your cylinder walls still look ok. When the ringland breaks and that piece of the piston breaks off, it can cause damage to the cylinder walls during operation.

I see, my mistake. You must have had some serious knock to get a piece of the top of the piston to break off. I'm assuming the piece was still sitting in there?

If not, then you may have actually melted part of the piston away. It wouldnt be the first time this has happened. In fact, I know a member on here (ehh hmmm) who actually managed to do this to a JE.

With the type of heat it takes to melt the piston, there is a good chance your cylinder walls are no longer perfectly cylindrical and you probably want to get the block honed.

Keep taking things apart, you'll find more.

You said there were bolts missing. What bolts were missing? Don't tell me the head bolts, lol.

While a MLS is reuseable, you don't know the history of your current headgasket, so don't take the chance and try to use it (especially with the history that you know of already - overheat etc.)

Also, detonation will take out your piston/ringlands. You could show us a pic and we could guess more emoji
