i've seen shipping a car costs at least $1000, maybe less for a shell though.

Check www.freightcenter.com that's where I get all my shipping quotes.

Actually it costs more to have a non running condition vehicle. Just had my wife's car shipped from FL to CA.

$750 door to door, open trailer, military discount.

Non running vehicles incur additional cost I assume because it requires that the shell be pushed or winched onto the trailer.

I used http://www.transportreviews.com/ to find a highly rated transporter. It is important to note that many companies will give you a quote and then put the bid out for a freight company to perform the work.
