I've searched for a few weeks but could not find any information on this. This week I'm going to do basic maintenance on my car and I was wondering one thing. I have 4-1 headers that does not meet the downpipe perfectly. I have a gasket in between of course and torqued properly but it still leaks a bit of air. Is this normal considering the downpipe is stock? I've seen some exhaust leak grease stuff at Autozone but I'm not sure if I should use it or not.
Alright how bad is your leak? I'm assuming you are using the stock two-bolt downpipe flange. I have 4-1s with the aftermarket downpipe that it slides in and has two bolts to keep it down. I never put a donut gasket in it so mine leaks a bit too, but not enough to really make a difference. I know the stuff you are talking about at autozone, since I work there, and it depends on how bad the leak is and how much of a gap it is. However I think you should have enough play in the flexpipe to make it fit like it should.
I CONTRIBUTED TO THE WIKI! ah... turbo. I love the turbo, the boost, the speed, the sound. and its all better when you do it yourself. cheaper too.
The leak is not very bad but bad enough where I can sorta of hear it from the inside of the car. It's a very small opening. I even tried to secure the down pipe to the header before the securing the cat and it just does fit right which is very strange. So I was thinking that autozone stuff would be ok just to fill that small hole. Any thoughts?
Go to the local Honda dealership and buy a tube of Hondabond. Its actually a really good rtv, it even stands up to turbo manifold heat. Only bad part about it is that its 10 dollars a tube!! But if you need to seal up a leaky exhaust gasket that stuff is the shit!
