#126318, "2.4turbo custom RWD????"

Hi all,
I have 95 GS,
I have been doing as much research as i can, and I want to do something different, somthing that I havent even heard of.
This is what I am thinking.
Taking a 2.4 turbo 420a (lol)
setting it with a rwd transmission,
and eliminating the front axles.
My questions,
How strong is the rear diff out of a GSX??? Or would I be better getting a rear diff out of a VR4?
And What kind of tranny can I get to mostly bolt up(i know that sounds weird) without to much aggravation on the motor side? Im not so worried about making the mounts.

I know its a huge task, but I am pretty sure my boss is wanting to sponsor my car, so I think my pockets just got a whole lot deeper.

You sir have much to learn... I'd start reading & searching if I were you, and be prepared to be flamed. The 420A & 4G63 do not mix, period.

The 2.4 is not a 420a.

I'll do the "easiest" answers for this, but yes you have much to research. I don't mean about an hour using the search on here either.

Also if this gets done I believe theres 2 guys that will get a 2.4 rwd car done first. I would have been all over it already but I'm still trying to climb out of a mountain of debt.

The diff out of a gsx will go in but I don't think it will hold up very long, at all. Probably the "easiest" way to do this would be a back half using a solid rear say 9" or keep it mopar and use a dana variation.

Look for a tranny out of the 2.4 Jeeps i.e. Liberty. They have a New Venture 1500 5 speed, and a Getrag NSG370 6-speed in the newer Jeep Liberties. You will have to find one thats 2WD and specifically for the 2.4. Also you shoud use the Liberty 2.4 flywheel as they are thicker than the passenger car flywheels. There are several other different trannys you could use using the NV Bellhousing, but I think the afore mentioned would be "easiest".

The mounts would be cake if you're competent in your welding skills, but if thats the case you might as well make a tube frame street car.
I believe in the case of a build like this the less you start off with the better you are. By this I mean frame, motor, tranny, rear, electrical, and so on.

Hope this helps, one day I SWEAR, one day I'll have one.

*edit*
Heres a pic I have of someone using a Liberty 2.4 bellhousing and a yota R154 tranny

i really appreciate the help here. that was my biggest concern about the tranny.

i know that alot of people are probably going to frown upon my choice, but thats life. I want to be different.

I have already figured that I am going to run a standalone ecu, thanks for clearing up the 2.4 (not 420a). I was a little confused on the subject since they all derive from the same base right? Im not sure. Anyways. It should be a fun project, but, on the plus side, I do have a shop now that I have full 24hr access too. which is awesome. lol...

thanks to jaytee from daytona for pointing me to this site, alot more helpful than other sites that i have tried.

you should register and log on the ASOG board
someone there did a full V8 RWD conversion of his Avenger
he used a solid beam axle and leaf springs on the rear and it fit nicely

I think it was a Ford unit

so far, still no word from my boss, although i am finding people that have extra parts around this area,

although through alot of thinking and research, i think im just going to take me 2L and mount it to a rwd tranny, that way i can start at the smallest to help eliminate possible mistakes and just work my way up. Get the base setup and then start the upgrade.

Im not sure if thats the best idea, but I want to see what works and what doesnt.
I will post my findings as i come across though.

But I do want to stay with some sort of independent suspension on the rear, I want to be as custom and unique as I can think.

Find a IRS out of a 99+ cobra or lincoln ls, its pretty damn close with the correct lug pattern as well.

great idea, thanks for the info about the irs from the cobra, i have a guy that works at ford in jacksonville. so that comes in handy.

found the Getrag NSG370 6-speed for $1075, on ebay, im going to check the local area to see if i can find something cheaper..

also found the complete IRS out of a 2001 Cobra for $600. The diff needs gears, but that is a fairly cheap price.

Does anyone know if the Getrag NSG370 6-speed will bolt up to the 420a I have in there now? That way its an upgrade path.
I just wanna start somewhere ya know.

Thanks everyone.

if the Getrag is in a Jeep Liberty with a world engine (GEMA) 2.4L it will not work the bolt pattern is completely different on those engines

They never changed the bellhousing bolt locations on the 4.0 jeep motor and it bolts up to those. According to Novak Conversions it will bolt up to the Mopar 2.4 and Mopar 4.0. Remember there are several different NSG370s out there because the bell housing is integrated into the transmission casing. Theres also guys saying they've mated a nsg to a mopar I4 on turbododge.

Actually if you look around theres Jeeps guys doing the NSG-Conversion from the AX-15, torqueflight, and NV variants.

Chris and I will get this rolling as soon as we both get out of some debt ourselves....shit, we're just happy to have both our cars even running.

the supra trans and jeep bellhousing is what i was thinking too.

the gsx rear diff would blow the fuck up
