#126154, "Massive Oil Leak"

Alright, I replaced my fuel rail and injectors on monday. Also, I finally did the whole egr blockoff thing. Yesterday on my way home from work, I hit a off ramp and the oil light came on and went off. So, I checked my oil this morning and it was barely on the stick.

So my question is could I be getting a big enough leakage from where the fuel injectors go into the back of the head, that it leaks about 3-4 quarts of oil in two days? When I put the injectors in, I couldn't get one of the rail mount bolts in, but when I wiggled it I couldn't get it to move at all. When I looked for a leak, it looked like it was coming from one of the injectors. I'm going to try to get that bolt in today and hopefully that'll fix it, but I was just wondering if there was anything else that I need to look at where I might have overlooked. Thanks

You need to perform a little homework on what the back of our head/IM looks like. The fuel rail and injectors have nothing to with the head. The assembly mounts to the lower intake manifold. Removing the whole intake manifold would also take the fuel rail with it.

The likelihood of you losing a few quarts though your fuel rail or fuel rail mounting bolt makes me laugh. It is not going to happen like that.

You need to look elsewhere for oil leaking.

Yeah, I just realized that when I looked the back of my spare head. My bad on that one. However, the leak has gotten way worse. I jacked it up, and it is a constant drip. And when I start it up, it is a steady stream. WTF! I was hoping it was something that I just didn't get on there right, but now I don't know what it could be. I got a guy coming to check it out because everything is way to tight on that side to even get a mirror back there.

If you're turbo, you may have a leak where you tapped the block and installed your feed assembly. Also, it could be valve cover gasket or head gasket. The rear of the engine, driver's side, is susceptable to head gasket leaks on the 420a. Personally if it was me I'd get some degreaser, water, and various cleaning tools and clean the back of the engine thoroughly. Then look for where the oil is coming from while keeping it topped off. Should be fairly obvious. Btw if it's smoking a lot in the engine bay, it's oil dripping onto your exhaust pipe. Coincidentally, it runs directly under where the block is tapped for the turbo oil feed from what I remember.

If it's a steady stream is is probably coming from the oil sender unit where you hooked up the oil feed for your turbo, that is assuming you have a turbo on there. A steady stream would most likely not originate from the head gasket, valve cover gasket, and would most certainly have nothing to do with your injectors or fuel rail.

Check the oil sender unit as well as your oil feed line.

Well, it looks like the cam seal is completely busted. Hopefully I'll get fixed by mid day tomorrow. That shit sucks. Scary as hell.

So you are saying that the cam seal, the seal behind the cam sprocket and inner t-belt cover is spewing that much oil? And it is coming out in a way to make you think it had something to do with the back of the head or intake manifold?

Explain.

Yeah.. I think you have more than just a cam seal busted. But we'll see I guess!

*Crank seal... sorry about that one. It blew out the crank seal, so I got that taken care of and so far so good. Not as much as a drip.

Not to keep poking holes in your explanation but are you referring to the front crank seal? In which case you pulled the pulley, timing components, crank gear, and replaced that seal without knowing 100% it was blown until seeing it?

Or the rear main seal which would require the removal of either the motor or transaxle to access, view and replace?

Neither of which would really cause you to think the leak came from the area in or around your injectors or fuel rail.

I am not saying you did not do either of these but I have a feeling you are thinking of something completely different.

Okay, this is what was happening. It was the front crank seal. And yes I pulled the timing cover, crank pulley, blah blah and replaced the timing belt while I was in there.

The seal blew out on my way home one night. I was cruising at about 70 when it blew and it just shot all of the oil all over just about everything from near the top of the valve cover to the bottom of the oil pan. I guess it was shot up by the crank gear when it was coming out. I couldn't find anywhere that would cause a leak that bad on the back of the block or head, so I just went into the timing cover and my dam seal was pretty much destroyed.

Don't get me wrong, I have my moments of being a "dumbass" when I get that freaked out, but for the most part I know my shit. I stepped away from it for a minute and narrowed it down to what it could be, and that was my last option since it was the hardest to get to and the most work to replace.

But it's been a couple days now of normal driving and I haven't had any problems since, so I think I got it right now.
