#125984, "Lope and Knock at idle"

Whatsup guys. Alright, I've had this problem since I bought my car back in February. At Idle it lopes like it has an upgraded cam in it. Also, it has a pretty loud knock towards the number 4 cylinder (transmission side of the motor). Okay, so originally I thought that it was the timing being off a little.

Here's where it gets kind of tricky though. It once threw a IAC code out of nowhere. Also, recently I noticed that when I depress the clutch, the knocking stops but it still lopes. I'm guessing that the throw out bearing is going since this is my third 2g that's had the bearing shot at around 160,000 miles.

Now as far as the loping, I picked up two IACVs at the junkyard as well as another throttle body. I cleaned them very throughly, and swapped the throttle body assemblies. And now it's still loping.

The CEL was on until I removed the battery cables a couple months back and hasn't been on since.

So I guess that timing would be my next shot. Kind of works out though, since I have a set of adjustable gears and lightweight crank pulley ready to be installed. What's your take on this one? What would be your next move? Just looking for a second opinion.

My throwout ticks on warmup and every now and then and its very new. I wouldn't worry about that unless its EXTREMELY LOUD. It'll be noticeable but shouldn't be loud. As far as the lope. DO a compression test and see what your compresion is at. You may have something wrong there. LOL check to make sure you got all your spark plugs in. rofl.

Checking your timing is a no brainer. And it does not require you to remove/replace crank puller and cam gears. Get Cylinder #1 at TDC and pull the inspection cover to verify the cam gear marks are aligned.

Are they? Then your timing is on.

Dave? Is that you?

Um, unless you are using a dial indicator, I don't think you can say with utmost certainty that you are on TDC (as in one tooth off or not)without popping the pulley to look. Obviously, your cam gears can line up with the crank being off on tooth.

LMFAO.

On the throw out bearing thing, it is so loud it sounds like the valves are tapping. I'm sure it has to be done since it is at that mile marker, and there was only one owner before me on this car so I guess he knew it was going and traded it in. Plus before it's fully warmed up, it'll shudder a little when I take off from a stop.

I'll try the comp. test and see what I get, as well as checking the timing on the cams, although that won't really tell me anything unless I get the crank off. I have noticed that at times it seems like it wants to die, doesn't go lower than about 700 rpm but I haven't really had anything like this happen to me before. And as far as the plugs go, It was doing this since I bought the car and I changed the plugs, wires, coil, IAC, and throttle body (last two were free- thanks to the junkyard).

Nope. Only thing I can think is either a vacuum leak at the vacuum box under the intake plenum or maybe a head gasket problem.

Shudder out/into 1st gear, from stop to pull, DEFINITELY a TOB. Aswell I have seen many others fail around 160K, including 2 of my own.

You ever replace it?

The tapping, are you sure its not piston slap or has that idea even come to mind? Forged Pistons?

Curious, Dealt with many phantom knocking problems on the 420A, only few of which have reasonable explanations. Fill me in.

Jeff.

Sorry, the knock was definitely the TOB. I already knew that. I have no idea why I posted it.
