#125566, "Bottom End build. Need help"

Ok so im getting ready for my build on the bottom end. and i been doing research, but i would like to hear some opinions on the best way to go about building it. i bought a spare block that was pretty messed up. just about all the rod bearings were melted to the crank or rods. so in other words im trashing the crank. becuase the journals are messed up. but beside all that. what should i tell the machine shop to do when i take it in. i want it hot tanked, bored .20 over. but what else should i tell them to do to the block? and possible the crank when i get the new one? All your opinions are greatly appreciated. thanks

Measure/check crank and deck block. I don't always deck the blocks on these. But you can have the machine shop check for straightness.

Honing the cylinders should be an obvious one but if you're getting it bored, they will do this anyhow. Have them change the freeze plugs while they have it, might as well since it's out.

And +1 on checking for flatness & decking if needed.

Should the shop have the freeze plugs on hand? Is there different/upgraded material that the plugs are available in?

Thanks, Patrick

Don't mean to thread hijack but since we're on the subject, how much does all that work typically cost? (Ballpark figure) I know it can vary by shop and location but just wanted to get an idea.

Bring the pistons with you, as well as the spec sheet that came with them. You'll also need to bring them the rods - they need the complete bottom end to properly balance it, and they'll need the pistons and the piston's spec sheet to bore for proper clearance on the pistons.

ok if you are going to assemble the block or the shop is make sure you use anearobic sealant on the bedplate. corbin has an awesome writeup on the 420a rebuild and it tells you everything you need to know.
