#125523, "Engine swap idea - Opinions wanted"
May-07-09 01:34 AM by Tuxdreamerx

Hey guys i have had an idea lingering and wanted some of your thoughts on it. My fiance has a 98 dodge stratus that has been sitting for a few weeks because the water pump or gasket sprung a leak it was never over heated and I have the parts to fix it I just havnt gotten around to it. Well we are strongly considering just getting her a new car. Now this stratus has the 2.4L in it which of coarse is similar to what is in some eclipse's I have a few options with the car if we get her a new one. 1. Fix it and just sell it 2. Fix it and make it my daily driver or 3. Pull that engine and build it for my eclipse and junk the shell. I really like the idea of building the engine but I havent done a engine swap like this and dont really hear much about doing that. I have plently of experience with pulling and rebuilding an engine and dropping it back in. It looks like my tranny might bolt up. And would it be just as bad as swapping a 4g63 into my car? If I do this I plan on going all out turbo it and everything. I also obviously plan on doing megasquirt or something for the engine management. Well anyway just give me your opinions, trust me I wont be mad if you tell me to fix the car and sell it I have just had the idea of building that engine for my eclipse in the air. Thanks in advance.

Edit: Just wanted to mention I did a search and found all the info I need to perform the swap so I am not asking for info on actually doing it just some words of wisdom or just your experiences in doing this.

You won't get that much for a 98 stratus in working order.. I would pull the engine, make the repairs, rebuild the block with forged internals (rods & pistons, new rings, maybe a slight overbore, and the necessary machine work), ARP hardware, bolt on the 2gnt head, etc. You will need to remove the balance shaft from the 2.4L block. If you go to the main page and browse the wiki, you will find a thorough write-up on how to do this. The engine will bolt right up, but you will have to get custom with the coolant line routing, etc.

Then I would part out the Stratus, get as many parts off it as you can and find Dodge/Stratus enthusiast forums and sell the parts to recover some of the costs of the engine rebuild. THEN junk what you have left.

Theres plenty of info on the 2.4 swap, just gotta find it.

It's a lot of work, but none of it is especially difficult on its own.

Tranny bolts up. Go over to Neons.org and check their motor swap section.

http://forums.neons.org/viewtopic.php?t=318202

As far as the 2GNT application just search a bit more as there are several details you need to consider. As Dino mentioned, nothing to play Russian Roulette over.

You could do srt internals and save some money. They hold up pretty good, and with a simple turbo set up you can make pretty decent power.
I would recommend you use MS for spark & fuel to get the most of it.

And +1 on the selling parts for the rebuild.

Awesome thanks for the fast response guys. I was doing some in depth research on it and it really looks almost as easy as the rebuild I did on this thing already just with some simple customization. I figured a 98 stratus wasnt worth much thats why I wanted to use what I could from it. This would save me the money of finding a 2.4 engine and I know this thing is in decent shape it runs. Just with the coolant leak we cannot drive it. I bought everything I needed to fix it timing belt , water pump, oil filter, oil and all.

Its not that difficult.

Use some thinking when it comes to brackets, and you could have AC emoji

Doesn't work. manifolds/turbo won't fit up against the firewall. you can use the shortblock, but the head is backwards, causing things to not fit.

a quick use of the search function would have revealed that.

That my turbo 2.4L 2GNT doesn't have a huge ridiculous hole in the hood, looks cleaner, and uses mostly SRT parts anyway.

It's not the head that's the issue, it's that the engine/trans combo is physically too large for the engine bay. if you use the NV-t350, you might as well just use a NA 2.4L block and a 2GNT head anyway.
