#125222, "car died now it won't start"

I have a 1996 gs non turbo and I was driving it last night it was running good like it has been and then I shifted into 4th and the motor died and wouldn't fire back up upon getting the car home the ignition switch fuse under the hood was blown so I replaced it and when I turned the key it blew right away I left it sit all night and replaced the fuse again and it's turning over now but won't do anything at all even when you spray starting fluid in it thinking it might be a fuel problem but nothing happens, now when I plug my scanner into the car to try to read anything it tells me link error so this points me to the ecu. I don't really know what to do if anyone can help me with this I would appreciate it alot. has anyone experienced this too?

Check the harness that runs along the EGR tube.

Its in the drivers side of the engine.

That harness has a habit of melting onto the pipe and causing issues such as not starting and shorts emoji

Good luck!

i hate electrical. my weakest link. sorry bud, someone will chime in though. My first thing to do, since I have extra ecu's laying around is to try another one. If that one doesn't work, i'd have to think more. I don't have much patience for electrical problems.

You need to find out if your problem is...

If you do not have spark...or if you do not have fuel or both.

Before you find another ECU, check and see if your fuel pump died. Not getting fuel to the rail would indicate that the fuel pump is not working properly. Check and see if you have 12v at the pump. If not, check the fuel pump relay/fuse.

Exactly. Pull your rear seat up and take it out of the vehicle.

Key up your ignition and see if your fuel pump is turning on or not. If its not, check to see if you have power going to the pump. If you do, and your pump isnt working, your fuel pump went out.

you wont have anything if that fuse is blown.

If you replace it and when turnign the key on, it blows....you have a short. Check the harness over, it shouldnt be too hard to find. Liek Tim said, check the EGR pipe.

I had the same fuse blowing over and over again and it was my coilpack, it shorted out and had a burnt spot on the side back of it..

Something to check, i replaced mine and stopped blowing fuses..

I changed the coilpack two times with spares I had and still not getting spark I don't know what to do, if I had the money I would just take it to a shop and let them figure it out

You should check the wiring under the fuse box. My "engine" fuse kept on blowing because a wire rubbed through right under the fuse box.
Something else to check?
