#12494, "Super technical question"

ok, I have a question that even the best around town can't give an honest opinion on. I recently bought the mopar windage tray for what I will call project 001. The car is currently equipped with arp bedplate studs. the windage tray comes with 4 "special" bedplate bolts with receving heads for the bolts that actually hold the tray to the engine assembly. so my question is installing this tray would mean removing half of the bedplate studs (one per bearing journal, zig zaging across) and replacing them with bolts. would doing this have adverse affects on the clamping force on the bedplate, and advertently damage my main bearings, or would I have to torque the bolts a little more than normal because there is a stud on the opposite side, or would I have to use ALL standard beadplate bolts and get rid of the studs, or is this idea not recommended at all for some reason.

bring it on............

Whatever you decide to use to hold it on I would stay uniform for every one. Not mix and match studs and bolts. Different specs and stretching between the two. I would pick one and stick with it. Possibly see if ARP has an equivalant to the new bedplate bolts, or a stud that would accept the windage tray.

I wouldn't feel comfortable mixing the two, but I can't say that it would cause you any damage.

I wouldn't even install it. If this is going on a 2GNT, from what i understand the Mopar windage tray for the Neon will not fit our cars, due to differences in the oil pan because of the location of our centermember as opposed to the Neon's.

I sure as hell wouldn't feel comfortable removing bedplate bolts for any reason other than crank removal and bearing replacement. Bearings actually bend slightly on the journal when they are torqued into place to for a more perfect circle around the crank.

damn is there a picture of this windage tray? I hear good things about it but have never seen one. Do you have to take the engine apart to install it?
