#12424, "96 GS stalling at idle & occasionally while driving"

I recently inherited a 96 GS with only 50k miles on it. Unfortunately for some reason it stalls a lot, and even stalls occasionally while driving. I'll pull off the freeway, throw it into Neutral, and then it dies. Any advice/help in determining the cause of this is appreciated.

Could be something as simple as air filter, fuel filter, plugs, wires, or bad gas.

The fuel filter on my 96gs is under the passenger side door in front of the rear wheel. next to the gas tank.

If you are still having problems it could be the MAP, TPS, IAC or coolant temp sensors... first ones that come to mind.

After replacing the filter, I drove it all day from L.A. to San Diego and back today. It idles MUCH better, but later in the day it stalled 4 times. Once just after starting, and three times stopping at stop lights. ALSO, four times on the way back while driving around 80mph the engine stumbled. I purchased new plugs but wanted to wait and see what happened after just one change. I'll install the plugs tomorrow morning and let you guys know what changes...

Cleaned the injectors today AND installed new plugs. BUT I got two stumbles in 5th gear at 3000 rpm this evening while on the freeway. THEN when I got off the freeway and put it into neutral it idled at a HIGH 1500 rpm's...go figure??? Thoughts anyone?

Well.... My car only had 22,000 when It did something like that. I know you cleaned the injectors but mitsu had to replace mine... It ketp wanting to die on me at stop's or slow takes offs then kick in all of a sudden.... Kinda like a Mad launch... Injectors were the only prob for me so check em out a bit more closely.

Anyone know a cheap way to do this? Is it relatively easy to check the injectors myself? Or are there any sensors I should be checking first?

i had the same problem with my ESI....it would stall on me when i was on the freeway....

i checked the engine code..(key on and off thing) and it said nothing. wiggled the map sensors and checked all the other stuff you were doing. it would still die on me at stoplights and high speeds.

so i finally took it the dealership...they had to replace the ECU.They said it was shorting out on me, causing the car to stall. Luckily I was covered under my warranty still. TrishaTalon had the same problem with her ECU. hope this helps

Well the stalling has finally subsided!!! I installed NGK wires in addition to NGK plugs, and added another fuel injector cleaner to the tank. I ran it on the freeway several times at high rpm's and that seems to have worked...who knows, but now the thing idles fine and doesn't stumble or stall.
