#124188, "HELP! Coil question"
Feb-20-09 02:26 PM by Warmage12

I tested my coil today... i've had a small problem with me car and i'm unsure wat's wrong. So i bought a multimeter and tried my hand at testing my car. I turned the nob to the ohm symbol with 20K on it to test the tower posts. They cam back 11.86 and 12.00 on the screen. I then tested the terminals with it on ohms at 200 and it came back 0.8 for 1 and 2. I then tested 2 and 3 and it came back 0.8. Is this in speck? Did i even test it right? I'm lostish. Any help would be awesome. Thanks.

So why do i own a DSM again?

Measure primary coil resistance by disconection connector and measure resistance between center pin and the pin to the left of that. The pin on the left is for cylinders 2 and 3. Resistance should be within specifications which is 0.51 - 0.61 ohms. Then check cylinders 1 and 4 for the same by measuring resistance between center pin and pin on the right. Resistance should be within specification which is 0.51 - 0.61 ohmns. Do no use the 20k setting on the multi meter. use the smallest measurement for more accuracy.

Now for secondary resistance. these are the nipples on the coil that the spark plug wires plug onto to. First measure resistance between nipples for cylinders 1 and 4. Resistance should be 11.5 - 13.5 ohms. Do the same for cylinders 2 and 3. Resistance should also be 11.5 - 13.5 ohms.

If either primary or secondary resistance measurements and not within specificattion, replace ignition coil.

If everything checks out ok, measure resistance of spark plug wires. each one should be 8k ohms. If any are not at specification, replace wires.

If still no fix, pull spark plugs. Check for obvious signs of damage and check electrode for wear. If you put them back in, clean them with some 2+2 and wire brush and file electrode so its flat. Check spark plug gap also which can be found on the emission sticker under the hood.

If still no fix, check compression, check resistance of your injections, camshaft position sensor and crankshaft postion sensor. I could go on but my fingers are tired so i hope this helps.

Thanks, i did exactly that. I used the 200 ohm mode for the pin check and they both turned out as 0.8. So i guess i'm gona have to replace it. The pillars were in spec but the pins weren't.
