#123052, "Check engine light off when on accessory but comes on when car starts"

I am having a problem with the emissions on my 2g - and I think I solved the problem *I replaced the purge solenoid*.

Prior to replacement, the check engine light was always on - car on accessory or car engine running. After the replacement, the check engine light only comes on once the car is started.

I went to Auto Zone to get a reset - but the employee said its strange that the check engine light is not on when accessories is selected. He said he did an erase on the code - but when I started my car up the light came on again.

Any ideas on how I can get it to turn off (besides pulling the light)?

It was the same for me, but you can still pull the code. If you fixed the problem I'd just unhook the negative battery terminal for a few minutes and the CEL should go away completely.

I pulled the neg for a minute and it did nothing - I'll unplug it for a longer amount of time and see what happens.

I just had the neg off for about an hour and that didn't solve the problem. From what I understand, OBD-II does not allow battery clearing off codes.

Any other ideas on how I can still be throwing the code only when the engine is running?

It does, actually, but it's re-flagging the code on every startup.

You're going about this completely wrong. Its not "How do i make the light go out," it's "How do i fixed whatever is causing the light to COME ON?"

Pull the code, see what its flagging, and fix itm, because whatever you replaced didn't help anything, apparently.

Exactly what code(s) are coming up?

And this may not be related at all..but when my voltage regulator went (causing the voltages to become chaotic), I'd trip a CEL because the ECU was receiving the wrong sensor voltages and interpreting them wrong. I'd also watch my temp gauge bounce along to the beat on the stereo...
