they are less restrictive. The stock intake is enclosed inside a box so it won't make so much noise, this is good if motor noise bothers you but bad if you want as much power as possible from your car.
I guess the box also helps keep the filter clean.

if you look at the stock intake then you will see alot of plastic, and plastic boxes and bumps and stuff in the tube leading to the in throttle body. then after the box that the filter is in i think there is another tube that leads to somewhere that is close to the front left fender. that plastic that all of that is made out of tends to muffle the sound of the sucking noise coming from the t/b. there is also some noise that comes from the overlap in the cams. which is to say there is a short moment when the intake cam is open while the gas/air is exploding. so when you take out all the plastic and replace it with metal pipe and a thin filter. then you hear all the nice sounds that come from your engine. the metal of the aftermarket intake is made only to increase hp. but the stock pieces are designed with ridges in them that muffel the noise that comes out of the engine. plus metal transfers sound alot better than plastic. hope that helps. and if i'm wrong then somebody tell me. but if i helped any give me some nice comments and stars. i still dont have any emoji

I'd say 90% is correct. The big part is the filter, the cotton guaze filters pull a ton more air in, and are not enclosed in the plastic box, so that is the primary sound. If you take the top of the stock air box so only the filter is there you will hear the air noise and engine noise.

Most of the sound you hear from the intake is exhaust noise, well the the combustion in the chambers, with the open intake the sound can be heard better. Dont get me wrong you hear air coming in the intake as well but that is the whistling sound, the deep growl you hear is coming from the engine itself doing its thing

The stock air box actually has a resonator that muffles the sounds just like a resonator does on an exhaust. They quiet it down for the normal people who don't know how to drive
