When an engine starts knocking it usually gets worse under acceleration correct? Im REALLY hoping what Im hearing is not knock. Hopefully a loose engine mount or something. Anyway I can only hear it while its idleing. My car is also starting to miss at idle. Any thoughts?

If I recall correctly, my knock did get louder at higher RPM's before it blew. Still it may have been more noticeable at idle. I think at higher revs it just blended with the other sounds better. I hope it's not man, unplanned rebuilds are no fun. (Especially when you can't afford a boost-ready rebuild) Make sure it's not lifter tick. Also if you have a rebuilt motor with forged internals, it might just be "piston slap" I believe it's called. Which I understand is nothing to worry about.
Edit-May also be a timing belt pulley bearing gone bad, causing your timing to skip a tooth, thus the sudden miss at idle. When it happened to me it sounded more like metal grinding though...Just a thought.

I forgot about piston slap, it could be that. It seems like its only when its cold. My old car used to have that. Sounded like a diesel truck when it started, cleared up later. The miss sounds more ignition related than anything. If its lifter tick is that just normal or should I do something about it.

Engine knock usually does get louder as RPM increases. As far as a cure for lifter tick, I personally would replace it, but what you can try is getting a really good motor flush, and let that run through the motor, drain it, and add your regular oil, and it might cure it. It could dirt or something in it. For piston slap, do you have forged pistons? I have only seen slap on motors that have been bored and are using forged pistons.

Also alot of people forget a miss at idle too could be caused by a leaking intake or exhaust valve.

Im really hoping/thinking its lifter tick. It doesnt sound like the hollow knocking of a rod, just a faint ticking. Its below freezing here and Im running 10W40, I heard that could have something to do with it.

most likely it's lifter tick with that heavy oil in there.

my subaru gets pretty noticable piston slap when it gets cold and the oil is due for a change, but that's a natural side effect of horizontally opposed engines.

I have heard that the JE pistons do make noise like that when they are cold. I heard it sounds like knocking. I have JE's in my motor, but I have not put it in yet. That is thick oil for the temperatures you are in. Should be 5W-30

What you've heard is true. This doesn't always happen, but it can. It's called piston slap.

Yeah, it usually depends on what the machine shop bored the cylinder walls to.

I was just under my hood revving my car a little. When I rev it, it will either miss a little and clear up, or Backfire. The thing that gets me is it almost sounded like an Intake backfire, unless it was just because of how close I was to the headers. But this knock Im hearing, sounds like its only noticable when the motor is idleing and will miss a stroke or 2. And I can only hear it on the transmission side of the car, not the crankshaft side. The car still pulls like it always did, if not better, so I dont think its the timing. But I am fairly certain its ignition related. I replaced my MSD coil pack back to the stock one to see if I just got a POS coil, but it didnt seem to help. Also a side note, I think my ECU is about to die. Could that be affecting something?

Ahh that video brings back memories....sad, sad, memories. Memories of having to ride the bus. I drove it to work (10 miles each way) with the knock for over 2 months before it went though. Mind you i was running it with solely Lucas in it. Sad times.

Finally got a vid. Theres a tapping noise from the PS belt in there, try not to mind that too much. Listen for it when it first starts climbing from a rev. Its almost a phantom knock. I hear it, I dont hear it, but it still gives me a feeling like I just got punched in the gut.

personally I'd put a lighter weight oil in and check for metal flakes in the oil (it'll look sparkely). fix the misfire, checking plugs, wires and the coil. the engine will probably shake less at idle. if the knocking sound goes away or gets quieter then it's probably the shaking combined with soft/broken mounts.

Will do. I assume the metal shavings in the oil are from the rod bearings? I know what you mean though, when I changed trannys from the one that would grind 3rd to the new one the fluid that came out was almost more metal flake than lubricant.

What am I looking for on my plugs again, fouling? Last time I checked a month or so ago they were a little on the white side but they looked about normal. I will check them after work today though.

What am I looking for on my plugs again, fouling? Last time I checked a month or so ago they were a little on the white side but they looked about normal. I will check them after work today though.

Yeah, metal flakes would be the remains of rod bearings. since your noise only really happens at idle I wouldn't worry too much but you're running oil that's specified as too heavy for the outside temps.

on the plugs look for fouling, if it's just one plug I'd replace the wires as well, but if two are fouled I'd really look at which ones. cylinders 1 and 4 or 2 and 3 are run off the same sections of the coil so if you have 1&4 fouled or 2&3 at the same time it's probably half the coil failing

if you've got an excessively white plug then it's gonna be a lack of fuel on that particular cylinder
