My 97 Eclipse RS was not always starting-up, so I changed the battery at Sears Auto Center. They told me my alternator was OK, so I just got a new battery. The same day, I realized that when I was switching on my turn-signal or the high-beam, my radio was cutting off. The next day after 15 minutes of driving, the battery light came on. I have not had these issues for the last 2 days. Went back to Sears for a check, and they told me that the voltage varies, but they have no clue why, and that it might be something with the electronics that only a dealer can help me with. I also went to National Tire and Battery for another check, and they told me voltage varies more than it should be, which is due to the alternator, and which is going to ultimately kill the battery.
Should I have my alternator replaced, or should I just kill the battery and get it replaced by the warranty? I am also planning to get a new sound system, can the variable voltage kill that as well? NTB gave me a quote for an alternator costing $300, can I find something cheaper online or at a different place?

If you are going to get a system, replace the alternator. $300? That better include the alternator price, and if it does...it's still too high IMO. It's a bitch to get out, but you can do it by yourself.

Call a few shops and ask if they have a Micro-Vat by snap-on. The Micro-vat can test the a/c ripple output of the rectifier. With a voltage variance the rectifier may be taking a dump which means you need a new alternator. Could also be windings and the regulator. The complete starting and charging system test only takes 5 mins or less. Many shops may not have this tester because its expensive, i paid 900.00 for mine and the dealer gave me 150.00 off. Call around the larger shops and ask.
If they ask you why then ask if they can load test the alternator and run a diode test on it as well as regulator test. If they have some older equipment then they just might be able to but i have never seen an a/c ripple tested before unless they have a large scope.
