**EDIT** If it's at a car lot, they try to charge retail for it. Retail value of any vehicle is a rip-off to me. Loan value with current miles & options is $5500, trade value is $6000. I'd stay within those boundaries.

Depends if you're buying at a dealership or private. Now if it's a dealer try to find out whether or not it's a certified used vehicle and if it is ask them if you can see the 144 point inspection that they did on the car and ask for a test drive seeing as how you would know how the car should feel when you drive it b/c of your 96 RS.
Now for a private owner, I think it's too much (I do't even think it Bluebook's for that high) unless they would let you take the car to a specialized mechanic to do a full check on the motor, tranny, chassis and suspension components and everything checks out. Also try to see if VIN numbers match so that way you know that it hasn't had a motor replaced. The reason why I say this is b/c if it has been swapped with that mileage on the car, I would think that the car was driven very hard and chassis flex is something you would want to consider. Also check for rust on the body as that is another main factor to consider.
Carfax is another way to check to see how well the car was maintained as most normal people don't have the time to wrench on their cars or don't know how to (Although everyone here seems to know what they are doing IMO)
It's really up to you if you think that's a good price, but I personally got my 98 RS 5 spd bone stock, 1 owner with 83,000 miles for only 2500 and the body was clean and the owner was a woman that garaged the car all the time. My Carfax pulled up that the car had been serviced only at the dealership and the lady had all the reciepts and documents for it. She sold the car so she could put a downpayment on a new car hehe. Little old ladies with nice cars are the best way to go IMO.
Just ask if anyone is willing to sell their own car if you have a hard time finding one, b/c for the right price most people would consider it and try not to go over bluebook.

Sounds a bit high. If you've got the credit/cash, why not invest the money into your current car? Even a modest $4000 would do wonders for your car. Performance mods aside, you could get a complete paint job, fresh wheels/tires, subtle suspension upgrade, and even some interior refinements.
Just a thought. Plus, if you work to clean up what you've got, you're not saddled with a mandatory payment for it like you would with a new car.

DR1665 actually brought up a good point. Since you're the one that took care of your 1st DSM, you'd know what to do to the car with your $$$. Now if you're still interested in buying the newer car look at this link I found from DSMtuners.com The guide is for a turbo model, but good advice nonetheless.

definitley not a good deal. you can get a gs in the same condition for way cheaper. im only asking 4850 for mine (not trying to tell you to buy it, just using as reference) and it only has 86k.
but if you have 7 grand to spare might as well go with a turbo. gs-t/ or gsx
but even so. if your not into the turbo scene. you can still find a way better deal. all it takes is time and patience.
