I will admit I know nothing about cars. Al I can do is make ep pretty. I've been here a long time and all i can do is change oil and plugs and brakes. That is it. Everybody says search. I love searching- I find somebody with a problem like mine (either a vac leak or an IAC in need of cleaning/replacing) and the answer to their problem as suggested by other 2gnters = "search." I dont know what or where an idle air controller is, I dont even know wtf a pcv valve is or where my fuel filter is at. i dont know jack. Nothing is more fustrating than searching 2gnt. I love 2gnt but i hate 2gnt.
cliffs: my idle is nuts. 2k is normal, if i rev up to 6k just for a few seconds idle will level out at 3K for a WHILE! WTF. help. No i wont search anymore. link me.

Search.
First check for vacuum hoses that aren't attached. You don't have to know what they do or where they are, just look around for anything not connected.
This sounds a lot like the Idle Air Controller motor, which is on the back of the throttle body. Buying a chiltons manual or downloading the factory service manual would help you find/clean/replace it.
What did you do recently that might have caused the vacuum to freak out?

An easy way to check some stuff is as follows (all you need is a philips screwdriver) -
Unscrew the ring clamp that tightens your intake tube to the throttle body. take off the tube so that you can see the butterfly valve. is it partly open? it should be closed completely. look for a braided wire leading to the front of the throttle body (this is your throttle cable). tug on it and you'll see the throttle plate open. does it get stuck and not shut completely? you can do this with the car running and see what happens.
that's obvious issue #1 (a stuck throttle cable). and I'm assuming you have a stock tb. (otherwise your idle adjust screw may be maladjusted, like on the MP throttle body)
obvious issue #2 - vacuum leak. you'll have to poke around with the car on/idling, see if you can find any leaks or disconnected lines. this will be hard to hear IMO if you're idling at 2k
issue 3 - the IAC that Dan is talking about. like he says, buy a chiltons. it even has a picture of the engine bay with all these things labeled,if you are a visual (I am.) try this last
