#120460, "The weirdest car issue I have seen....Anyone have some input?"

Ok, so I was driving home this morning from a party....It was pretty cold, around -6. The car started fine...I was driving, I could hear what sounded like the belts squeeling, (I assumed cus of cold) then a loud clacking noise for about 4 seconds then everything seemed fine.

I got on the highway, drove for about 15 mins...(radio, high beams, etc) As I was getting off the exit I noticed my dash looking a lil dim...I took it out of gear, the RPMS were at zero, so was my speed...I was still moving around 40mph...I would rev, but the RPM wouldent really move...Battery light came on...then a few moments later the SRS light.

At the off ramp the car just died, I couldent start again-wouldent turn over....I put it in neutral, tried to bump start it rolling, no luck. (which Im really good at, I can do it anytime)

Is this the alternator gone? Maybe battery? A Connection? I had the car towed today, but I need to fix it. Any input is appreciated.

first off check to see if you have a belt on the alternator emoji
if you do then continue on

start at the battery and move outwards.
check the terminals are clean and not touching anything
follow the white wires to the fusebox and check for insulation damage then check the fuses
then follow the harness back to the alternator looking for burn through especially around the EGR (if you still have one emoji )
at the alternator check the one wire that gets bolted on and then check the actual plug in the alternator. sometimes they can pop out.

it HAS to be somthing along that track so im sure you'll find somthing

Use a voltmeter and check the voltage of the battery with the car running. Should be ~13-14v

Check the belt from Crank Pulley to Alternator.

From description, could easily be missing a belt.
Follow foggy's track.

especially because the battery light came on, then the airbag light, then he lost gauges, then it died. That means somewhere along the way, your battery isnt getting charged. follow what ^^ said

I would say you shredded a belt maybe an alternator startign to lock up. The squeel is the motor trying to spin the alternator that doesnt want to spin. The squeel is the belt. The clacking sound is a few of the belt ribs that have broken and shredded and are now slapping the firewall ect. When the sound quit the belt snapped.
