The Auto dsm's have 4-speed electronically controlled transmissions. I read somewhere about a TCU that controls the gear changes.

My problem is this, I(average 2-3 a week) find myself stuck in gear, be it the second or the third. When this happens I have to stop the car, shut it completely off, and restart. Just shifting to park then back to drive doesnt work. I haven't really found any common ground as to when the problem occurs...it's happened in the heat, the rain, as i drove aggressively, passively....no real commonality.

Does this seem to be a TCU problem? If so, how much would a new one, parts and labor cost me? Would one off of a salvaged DSM work for me(if so,what years would it have to be..96 Talon ESI)? Would I be able to install it myself(like a computer chip), or would it be a transmission place job?

Would leaving it cause further problems in the future?

Could be a TCU problem or something mechanical. you could try changing trans fluid and filter. Check the fluid for any particle see if this helps.

could be the computer or one of the sensors or relays. how many miles on your car? when was the last time you had the tranny serviced? after you check the fluid and make sure all the connections are secure, if it's not any of that, see if you can find a tranny shop around that will use the scan-tool on it. my tranny shop didn't even charge me to diagnose mine. they said it was the eatx relay on the firewall. i changed the relay and my car was still in limp-mode. it's probably a broken wire or bad connection somewhere. just see what the scan-tool says and take it from there. if it is the computer, you can change that out yourself in about 10 minutes. it's just 1 big wiring harness plug and a couple of bolts to take the computer out. if it's the relay, you can change that in about 10 seconds.

I got my tranny serviced in July of 2000....i planned on getting it redone in july of 2001. I've only put about 4,500 miles on it since then. The car itself has 117777 miles on it.

How much would a tranny computer run me? from dealer or salvage?
