#119627, "Car starts for 1 second then dies"

I have a 1995 eclipse nt 5-speed with an exhaust and a cold air intake. The problem started about 4 months ago with random stalling. It was almost as if it stopped getting fuel and/or spark all at once. Fortunately it would always come back and run fine. I had noticed also that my gas mileage was about 20% down from what it usually was. My EGR valve has been replaced a couple months ago due to a rough idle problem. Also, the fuel filter was replaced and the fuel pump was tested to be normal. I also tested the MAF sensor and TPS and all was normal. For the last month the car has been running great with no problems. The other week I was driving to my gf house and just as I was about to turn into the drive the car dies. When it dies the lights all stay on. This time instead of starting back up it does nothing. I kept playing with it and I have found that if I put the key in and immediately turn it to start it will fire up for about a second or two and immediately cut out. I can even give it some gas to get the RPM's up and it will die again. Its not the type of stalling like it is not getting enough gas, its just like hitting an immediate kill switch. Another wierd thing that I noticed is that if I leave the key in the on position and try to start it after it had fired up for a couple seconds it will not start again. It will only start again if I turn the key off and then turn it on again to start without waiting for the fuel pump to prime.

I had to take it to my personal mechanic and he said that he had it hooked up to his comp and it was saying that fuel was not going to the injectors and that the coils were not getting power. He said that the ECU was toast. Well, I got another ECU from the junkyard (same model number) (guy said that the car was totaled but still ran because he heard it the day before) and installed it and I still have the same problem; starts and immediately dies.

After reading all of the previous tech problems from this forum and another DSM forum I have not seen this exact issue replicated, some similar though. I am thinking that I may possibly have a bad fuel pump relay as I do not hear the fuel pump prime every single time that I turn the key to on. Also, a possible crank/cam sensor/map sensor.

I appreciate any advice, as I dont really want to have to tow it back to the shop.

the fuel pump doesn't do the weeeeem sound every time you put your key on, this is normal. try the crank sensor. assuming your ecu is good.

(and by computer, you mean scanner right?(the mechanic))

CLUTCH

Yes correct, the OBD(1 or 2) scanner that the mechanic used.
